Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice, Ruth McGregor, Announces Retirement

Arizona Supreme Court Justice Ruth McGregor announced today that she would leave office and retire at the end of June to spend more time with her family.
McGregor, a 1974 graduate of the Arizona State University College of Law, has a solid reputation in the legal community and a long history of community service. She made the announcement at the end of her State of the Judiciary speech today at the State Capitol.
Her departure comes one year earlier than expected -- she was selected by other judges in 2005 to serve a five-year term -- but said she and her husband decided to enjoy more family time and "pursue other interests." However, she added that she has no specific retirement plans and expects to stay engaged in local legal issues.

Governor Jan Brewer will fill McGregor's spot from among three applicants. An article in the Arizona Capitol Times today quoted McGregor and Justice Michael Ryan as saying that it was likely that Vice Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch (below) would take McGregor's place.
