Jarrett Maupin II, Phoenix High School Governing Board Member, Indicted by Feds

Jarrett Maupin II, one of seven members of the Phoenix Union High School governing board, has been

indictedby a federal grand jury of one count of lying to the FBI.

If you'll recall, Maupin was arrested in November for the same alleged crime by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and charged with a misdemeanor by County Attorney Andrew Thomas' office. The local charge was dropped, though, and we speculated that Arpaio might be kiddin' around about a possibly felony charge against Maupin by another agency. It's no joke.
The case involves allegations made by Maupin to officials -- and to New Times -- about Mayor Phil Gordon. The accusations are wild, and tough to believe when no evidence has been offered to back them up.

Maupin, also a former candidate for Phoenix mayor, has served on the school board since 2006, according to his bio on the district's Web site.

Neither Maupin nor officials at the governing board were not available for comment. But it seems likely the board will have to handle this somehow.

Though Maupin apparently needs to prepare a legal defense, he's still a key representative of thousands of teenagers and parents in this community -- and they'll want answers.
