Phoenix Athletes' Blogs Bite on Yardbarker.com

Popular sports Web site Yardbarker.com hosts a slew of superstar bloggers from the world of sports -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, tennis pro Rafael Nadal, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban, golf legend Tiger Woods, and NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon are just a handful of the 80 or so notables who've signed up to write blogs on the site. Most of the guest bloggers are dedicated to maintaining a presence on Yarbarker, but the three athletes from Phoenix who have blogs there -- Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Suns shooting guard Leandro Barbosa, and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald -- have been slipping.

Of the three, Taurasi's been the most regular blogger, posting weekly (sometimes daily) updates since she joined Yardbarker in late August of 2007. Taurasi's blogs are entertaining because they not only provide insight into Mercury games and the WNBA in general, but they also pontificate on pop culture topics like "Who Is the Ultimate Panty-Dropper Musical Artist?" (Taurasi votes for Tupac Shakur, and also includes Robin Thicke, Marvin Gaye, and Sade among her picks). But she hasn't even updated since October 20.

Leandro Barbosa joined Yardbarker in January of this year, but hasn't updated since May 5, when he lamented the Suns' loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the playoffs.

Larry Fitzgerald has been the worst about updating -- he hasn't even posted a single blog since signing up early this year. Instead, his desolate Yardbarker blog links to his Web site, and Fitzgerald isn't blogging there, either. The site consists mostly of links to or reproductions of the most recent news articles about Fitzgerald and the Cards.

Will Larry Fitzgerald please say something?

Of course, an athlete's job isn't to blog; it's to play sports and win the game. But it's not like the Mercury, Suns, and Cardinals have been too busy kicking ass to spew their views on the Internet. The Mercury, defending WNBA champions, didn't even make the playoffs this season. The Suns are struggling, despite squeezing out a win over the Portland Trailblazers on Sunday. And while they put up an impressive fight against the New York Giants, the Cardinals are still on a quest to prove they aren't one of the crappiest teams in the NFL.

Other athletes, however, have been churning out blogs on Yardbarker like mad. Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden, Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, Denver Broncos All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey, and Atlanta Hawks point guard Acie Law have all posted blogs on Yardbarker within the past 24 hours. Hell, even legends like Tommy Lasorda, Troy Aikman, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have updated more recently than Taurasi, Barbosa, and Fitzgerald.

Yardbarker.com is a place for athletes and fans alike to discuss games, teams, and strategies, and to interact with each other. It wouldn't hurt for the Phoenix teams to have more of a presence on the site. Our recommendation? Recruit ever-quotable Suns guard Shaquille O'Neal to do some blogs. If Shaq's enthusiastic musings on his Twitter account are any indication, he'd have plenty to say on Yardbarker. -- By Niki D'Andrea
