A 51-year-old Arizona prison inmate who was assaulted a week ago died of his injuries on Sunday, a prison spokesman confirmed this morning.

The man's name and more information about the assault will be released later today, said Nolberto Machiche, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Corrections. The victim was assaulted on October 20 and taken to a hospital, where he died yesterday, Machiche said.

Prison officials said another inmate committed the assault. No arrests have yet been made and an investigation is ongoing.

The prisoner was being housed in the Meadows Unit of the Eyman Complex, a medium-to-high security state prison in Florence. According to a daily count sheet from October 24 on the DOC Web site, Meadows is a medium security unit housing more than 1,100 prisoners.
