Phoenix New Times, Village Voice Executive Editor Mike Lacey Responds

Sat Apr 12, 2008 at 02:04:28 PM

My invoking the argot of Black artists achieved a level of insensitive stupidity almost galactic in scale. Whatever discussion lingers about the use of the words “bitch” or “ho” in hip-hop, comedy, film or literature, there is no question about the N-bomb coming out of the mouth of a 59 year old white man.

I am not Marcellus Wallace.

I sent the following words of atonement to the Society of Professional Journalists as well as to the reporter from the East Valley Tribune who wrote about the incident following my crass off the cuff comments at the SPJ awards ceremony April 4th.

“It is understandable that my comments about a dead colleague rankled listeners. My words, meant to honor a friend, were inappropriate. All present have my sincere apology. It is regrettable that any phrase of mine offended those attending a First Amendment awards banquet. We accepted these honors on the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination. It is a sorry affair indeed that I should detract from the on-going civil rights struggle that continues to unfold on streets Valleywide.”

Those of us who live in Phoenix understand that these are not idle regrets. One of our most heavily e-mailed articles this past year concerned a young Black driver railroaded by law enforcement. And almost every issue of the paper has another chapter in our Sheriff’s on-going jihad to round up, arrest and intimidate anyone with brown skin.

Recently County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who ran on a platform devoted to prosecuting Mexican immigrants, used my dumb-ass remarks to attack us. Our pending lawsuit against him, I’m sure, had little to do with his informative comments.

In fact, SPJ honored Jim Larkin and myself because of our resistance to grand jury subpoenas issued from County Attorney Thomas which culminated in our arrest and jailing by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

One week before the SPJ award, we were feted by the ACLU as civil libertarians of the year because of our coverage of Arpaio and Thomas. My remarks at that dinner about the current racial climate in Phoenix were entitled: It’s Selma Time.

It is stunning to realize that at my age it only took me a mere seven days to undercut the intent of ‘Selma Time’ by acting the fool.

This is one story about me. The better stories are in our papers.

-Michael Lacey

What a fucking pile of crap. Look how quickly this asswipe points the finger at Arpaio.

This has nothing to do with Arpaio, it has to do with you, an arrogant retard who thinks that your shit doesn't stink and thus you have a free pass to act exactly like your shitstain newspaper condems everyone else.

This paper carried an article savaging White Hip Hop artists as Wiggers. That's White Niggers. Total hypocricy.

But then again the it is easy to be Hypocritical when you don't really stand for anything, and the New Times does not stand for anything other than some pathetic caricature of 'anti-establishment' that ceased to be cool sometime in the late 80s.

I have asked this question dozens of times...

How many Hispanic Writers and Editors are there at the New Times? How many Black?

My guess is Zero, just a bunch of Honkies on their high horse.

Ps Stephen Lemons smells like week old diapers and cigars

Joebob says:

Thanks Todd Stallion for bringing some education to the conversation.

Coz says:

The the only I know of quicker at pointing the finger at someone else is Arpaio...

>>What a fucking pile of crap. Look how quickly this asswipe points the finger at Arpaio.

Coz says:

And at least Lacy has the balls to admit he was wrong and apologize.

Arpaio on the other hand is never wrong even when caught lying and his hand in the cookie jar...

Lacy is a far more honorable man than Arpaio will ever be. Lacy has more integrity in his little finger than Arpaio will ever have.

What a Lying piece of shit Thomas is....

Concerned in AZ says:

Self-righteous Fox Hannity and Thomas eat out of the same trough. Thomas and Arpaio are inflaming the public and creating their own problems which in turn they are now complaining about. Lets vote them out this election! We had enough and they've cost the taxpayers dearly.

AZ Observer says:

Andrew Thomas needs to get back to his job and off the TV with his grandstanding about a liberal's comments taken out of context. This kind of story is boring -- we had enough of the Imus story to last a lifetime. WE GET IT! WE DON'T NEED MORE OF IT! Hannity and Thomas have milked it to death -- time to move on to the more serious matters at hand like 200 Sheriff's officers storming into the small town of Guadaloupe scaring the families and children, like a scene out of Bagdad! What's all that about?? Law enforcement storming small towns??
ABUSE OF POWER REIGNS IN MARICOPA - HANNITY NEEDS TO COVER THAT! THAT THREATENS US ALL.

Concerned Citizen says:

TODD STALLION GO BACK TO YOUR HOME AT EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE WHERE YOU BELONG! WE'RE TIRED OF YOUR DESTRUCTIVE TRIPE.

Hank Hill says:

Candy Thomas, you lying piece of shit. It was out of your hands?

Also, why was Candy Ass even on HC? He's no champion for civil rights.

AllForFirstAm says:

Bottom line, apology or not, that was completely unprofessional and damn stupid of a man in Lacey's position. Although, his response (and those of the other liberals out here) is not surprising at all. It's completely typical of a liberal to constantly use the 1st Amendment to cover their ass for the dumb shit that spews out of their mouth. This is especially typical of the New Times family of liberal rags.

Use No. 1382 for a New Times paper: Pick up dog poop in the yard.

Abner Kravitz says:

How very pathetic to not just give a sincere apology... Mr. Lacey just could not bring himself to do that. Why? Because he is NOT sorry. He thought it was "cool" to say "my nigger". I don't think he can ever realize how utterly foolish, idiotic and pathetic he looked saying those words. No fool like an old fool, as the saying goes.

Just had to deflect to the Arpaio situation, rendering the apology meaningless.

Shrf Arpaio has his problems...I don't agree with some things he does. However, Mr. Lacey is not fit to hold Arpaio's coat.

Lacey and all the liberals that read that pitiful New Times and think they are so smart and insightful...you probably really don't understand that anyone with a brain thinks you are just pathetic.

Well, I'm thankful Lacey admitted at a free speech banquet that manners are important. I'm also glad he called himself a fool.

Sadly though, Lacey's ego just won't quit.

Lacey's comments were most certainly not "almost galactic" in scale. But even in his apology he proves yet again that he thinks too much of himself and his imagined importance.

Lacey's probably the kind of guy who refers to himself in the third person.

But Lacey forgot the purpose of the "award" and tarnished the event by behaving very much like himself.

Yes, above all, Lacey is apparently consumed by himself. So the rest of the people in attendance had to suffer through Lacey's hubris.

Bright spot: At least for me. I wasn't there!

dave says:

Old white people talking street is so CUTE, like little kids swearing. Ah woojie boojie boo!

My comments concern the conduct of someone who should know better. But I must respond to the person who said Lacey isn't fit to hold the sheriff's coat.

The sheriff is a festering boil on real law enforcement. Long time racist blowhards should be confined to their own homes, having no place on the public payroll. Only the uneducated un-Americans like this sheriff. Why? Because these types fear they'll lose their meager jobs to someone who works harder.

They're hateful and harmful and unfortunately live to smear their fear over others. Such is a typical fan of those living in fear who like Sheriff Joe, the eternal blow-hard.

My question is why does Phoenix media continue to typically pander to this idiot whenever he calls?

Emil Pulsifer says:

The Arizona Republic actually published an "opinion piece" today on the subject, written by -- drumroll -- Mike Anthony Scerbo, who is the public information officer for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office(!).

I continue to be astounded by the blatant, indeed, transparent attempts at deceit and manipulation practiced by individuals like Scerbo. He actually asked what the difference was between Lacey's comment and Don Imus' racist comments characterizing a women's basketball team (four-fifths of whom are Black) as "nappy-headed hos", and claimed that there was a double standard involved.

Well, one difference is that Fitzpatrick was White. Another difference is that Lacey and Fitzpatrick were longtime friends. A third difference is that Lacey was speaking respectfully of someone for whom he felt personal affection and professional admiration. Get the picture yet?

Sure, Lacey's comment was tacky. And it's always embarrassing to see middle-aged White men try to demonstrate how "with-it" they are by using Black urban slang. But racist? Racists don't adopt Black street lingo to honor their friends. Get real. And get over it.

Amy Alkon says:

Lacey fucked up. We all do it. Sometimes we even say hurtful, racist stuff -- even if we're not racist, just carried away and trying to sound "cool" in the moment. The difference is, most of us aren't being recorded on video when we do it.

How many of you here, vilifying Lacey, have never made a racist remark yourself?

The big difference between Lacey and a lot of people these days: Lacey held himself accountable for his fuckup, explained that he was wrong, explained why, apologized, and expressed regret.

Y'all oughta try that yourselves sometime -- if you have the balls.

Charles Raymond says:

Given the context, Lacey's remarks weren't racist. Offensive, sure--in the same way that using the words cunt or dickwad would have been unacceptable in that setting. If he should apologize, it's for being rude or boorish or disrespectful. (Or drinking too much.) That's unlikely, though. He kinds of revels in being a bad boy (even though he's a geezer). Consider it a different kind of attention-deficit disorder--the man craves attention. I suspect he's probably enjoying this.

Giulio Sciorio says:

If Lacey was only darker skin people would be ok with this.

dragonladi says:

Lacey showed more class & more TRUE concern for the effects of his ill-advised comments than any politician or celebrity EVER has when in a similar situation. In fact, as an African-American woman, I have no problem accepting his apology -- unlike other apologies that demonstrated insincerity.

Mr. Lacey had the decency not to offer an excuse and to simply say he did something stupid & wrong. Good for him!!! I wish politicians were intelligent enough to do the same.

As for those who don't understand why THEY can't say the "N word" -- think of it like this....there are things you cannot say to or about a Marine UNLESS YOU ARE A MARINE. Why? Because they have shared experiences in common. Same for any branch of the military. The same concept applies to American Blacks -- we have experiences in common and, most definitely, our parents & forebearers had lifea-threatening experiences in common. So, the same concept applies here although the common experiences are different.

Meanwhile, Lacey for President!!! At least he would own up to his errors.

happyashell says:

The New Times has only white people working their expect in the circulation working their. No black people, no mexicans, It's crazy, the office was the first school for black people in this area too.

risingson says:

Am I the only one who picked up on the fact that Lacey was high as fuck? Hey Mike: Note to self - try to avoid smoking reefer immediately before acceptance speeches. It might help you appear like slightly less of a jackass than you are in real life.
