Chopper Pilot Says UFOs probably balloons with flares

Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 04:51:38 PM

By Ray Stern

Red lights in the sky above Phoenix looked like flares dangling beneath helium balloons to a police helicopter pilot who was in the air last night when the sightings occurred.

Phoenix police said earlier today they would allow the media to interview pilot Bruce Bates, who claims to have had a good view of the mysterious lights observed and photographed by residents in the North Valley. Police spokeswoman Stacie Derge later canceled the meeting and minutes ago sent this e-mail to news reporters:

"After further consideration we have cancelled the 4:30 pm interview opportunity with Officer Bates. The lights are not in any way affiliated with the Phoenix Police Department and we are not doing any kind of investigation into them. Officer Bates saw them as well as many other people in the city. He said that they appeared to simply be some flares hanging from possibly a helium balloon or balloons. We absolutely advise that no one else try this as hanging flares like that would create a fire hazard and is very dangerous. We will not have any further comment about these lights."

This description seems to point to a hoax as the best explanation for the lights. Balloons would float in random formation with the prevailing winds. They would seem to disappear once the flares burned out. And airport radar equipment isn't made to see small, non-metallic objects like balloons.

Case closed, as far as I'm concerned.

Kris Gill says:

Why does this guy in his interview say that the planes were out in the air and they probably saw it was flares - even though they say there were no planes in the air?

Your guys' comments are rediculous.

Disinformation? Are you kidding. They are balloons with flares on them. People saw their neighbor send them up into the air. All we need to do is get the news stations or the police to replicate it. However it is a fire hazard so I doubt that will happen.

Also it was Luke AFB who said no planes were in the air. They weren't talking about police helicopters.

Geese. Go get your foil hats and hide beneath your beds.

And this is why there's so much garbage regarding UFOs. Folks who want to hoax and no one wants to honestly report if there was or wasn't aircraft in the vicinity of the reorted sightings just in case..........

I'm more concerned about the "just in case" than I am those who want to pull off a hoax.

Hey, AZ folks.......
Why would someone step forward and admit to hanging flares over or near Phoenix? Don't you have a few laws regarding such activity and if so, why would it be admitted to?
I can understand why someone might try to get a few yucks, get their 15, but coming forward and admitting? Oughta be a felony! So, as they say, What's Up?
