M. Ward, Vetiver, Owen, and Sigur Ros are Just Some of What's Selling at Revolver Records

m ward.jpg
Mathew Ward and Zooey Deschanel (a.k.a. She & Him).

We fully admit to our jealousy of Mathew Ward.

Not only does the Portland guitarist have an obscene amount of talent (which he's demonstrated much over the past decade on seven separate full-length albums), Ward's collaborated musically with such indie all-stars as Cat Power, Bright Eyes, and Yo La Tengo. The dude (who performs as M. Ward) even got to perform on Letterman last night.

Plus, he's best friends with the gorgeous Zooey Deschanel, which makes us even more envious.

In case you missed Noah W. Bailey's post from December, Ward joined forces with the cutie-pie actress to create the indie-folk duo She & Him, which has gotten much love from music geeks and critics alike. But as good as their debut disc, Volume One, was, it pales in comparison to the quality of Ward's Hold Steady.

The 14-track album, which was released by North Carolina indie label Merge Records, is a spectacular slice of folk-pop, featuring appearances by Deschanel and DeVotchKa's multi-talented Tom Hagerman. Even though it's been in stores for a few days, the disc is moving faster than Jamaican sprinter Ulan Boll, especially at Phoenix store Revolver Records, 4214 North Seventh Avenue, where it reigns atop their current list of best sellers.

Andrew Bird, Franz Ferdinand, Bon Iver, and Courtney Marie Andrews are Just Some of What's Selling at Stinkweeds Record Exchange

bird.jpg
The phenomenally talented Andrew Bird.

It sucks pretty hard that Tucson gets all the cool shows these days.

Like Andrew Bird, who's making a stop in the Old Pueblo this Saturday to gig at the Rialto, but won't make a stop in Phoenix. This truly blows, since we've been digging on the talented singer/songwriter since we first saw him perform "Plasticities" on Letterman last year. Since our hectic schedule doesn't permit a five-hour round trip down to Southern Arizona, we'll have to console ourselves by listening to Noble Beast, the artist's newest release on Fat Possum Records, which we bought during a recent trip to Stinkweeds Record Exchange, 12 West Camelback Road. The album's got 14 tracks of quality musicianship, embodying Bird's multi-instrumental brand of folky baroque pop.

And while we were at Kimber Lanning's indie record business, we also snatched up a copy of Courtney Marie Andrews' Urban Myths, which features a lot of the same kind of acoustic indie chick pop that the cutie-as-a-button songstress has been performing at local venues like Modified Arts as of late.

Noble Beast and Urban Myths are just two of the 10 discs on Stinkweeds' top 10 best sellers for the week of February 3-9. Read on for the remaining eight titles on the list, including the latest from such indie delights as Bon Iver and Crooked Fingers.

Animal Collective, John Frusciante, Atmosphere, and Lady GaGa are Just Some of What's Selling at Zia Record Exchange

animal.jpg
The animals of B'More foursome Animal Collective.

Do y'all smell that?

No, it's not the repulsive scent of the titanic dump those Pittsburgh Steelers bastards dropped on the PHX's collective hopes and dreams for Super Bowl championship. I'm talking about something much, much better: The glorious smell of freshly released albums.

The post-Christmastime drought of new discs ended within the past few weeks, resulting in a flood of releases flowing into record stores and your iTunes library. In fact, a majority of the top 10 best selling titles at Zia Record Exchange, 105 West University Drive in Tempe, for the week of January 28-February 2 made their debut in 2009. That includes Merriweather Post Pavilion, the latest effort from freak folk/indie/experimental/ psych-pop foursome Animal Collective. I've been listening to its songs off and on over the past couple weeks and can honestly say it's my personal fave of 2009 (But maybe that's just because I dig whacked-up experimental jams).

The rest of the list, which includes a fresh solo album from Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, follows the break.

E-40, Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, and Lil' Rob are Part of What's Selling at Circles Records and Tapes

e40.jpg
E-40, the self-described "King of Slang" and "Ambassador of the Bay."

Hyphy sure has faded quite a bit in popularity over the past couple years (check out this story in our sister publication SF Weekly as to the reasons why). The rambunctious and uptempo Bay Area hip-hop subgenre, which helped introduce "ghost riddin' the whip" into the national consciousness, blew up massively in 2006 thanks in part to E-40 and his Lil' John-produced hit single "Tell Me When to Go."

Both the track and the album from whence it sprang, My Ghetto Report Card, rocketed up the Billboard charts and gave E-40 his biggest level of success since he entered the rap game in the early '90s. As for the rotund rap star's follow-up, last year's The Ball Street Journal? Eh, not so much.

Since dropping in November, Ball Street has only sold around 125,000 copies and illustrates how hyphy's star has been falling. The customers at Circles Records and Tapes are still digging on the disc, since it's the number one seller for the week of January 20-26. As always, hip-hop and other urban and R&B artists are the major movers and shakers at the downtown Phoenix music store. So for a look at what else is on their top 10 list, click the link below.

Madlib, Blatz, Deerhunter, and Crystal Stilts are Part of What's Selling at East Side Records in Tempe

madlib.jpg
Otis Jackson Jr. (a.k.a. Madlib) wins the award for the coolest bedroom ever.
With apologies to Russell Simmons, Madlib's arguably the hardest working cat in hip-hop.

Besides creating his own jams and flows under a few different noms de guerre (Quasimoto, Sound Directions, Yesterday's New Quintet), the California-born MC and DJ has produced albums and tracks for a number of marquee-level artists, including De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, and MF Doom. He's also collaborated more than a few times with such ghetto-fab talents as Mos Def and the late J Dilla (who passed away in 2006).

The latter MC served as a mentor to Madlib, and their collaborative project Jaylib produced the stellar 2003 disc Champion Sound. J Dilla proved to be a significant influence to his protégé, so much so that music critic Jeff Weiss (of our sister publication LA Weekly) described the talented pair as having "a friendship borne out of mutual appreciation and respect."

The fifth and sixth volumes in Madlib's ever-growing Beat Konducta series, which were release in August and October of last year, are filled with separate suites of jazzy instrumental hip-hop and serve as a tribute to J Dilla.

The discs are also at the top of the list of best-selling albums at East Side Records, 217 West University Drive in Tempe, for the week of January 13-19.

The rest of East Side's top 10 sellers follows the jump.

Kanye West, Ludacris, and Nickelback are Part of What's Selling at Zia Record Exchange in Phoenix

kanye.jpg
The "Louis Vuitton Don" is moving units down at Zia Record Exchange.

Although Kanye West's emotionally-wrought 808s & Heartbreak didn't prove as big a smash with most fans and critics as his previous discs, it's still a quality album (our music editor Martin Cizmar considers it one his faves of 2008) that's continues to chart pretty damn high on the Billboard charts.

It's also flying off the shelves at the north Phoenix location of Zia Record Exchange, 2510 West Thunderbird Road, where it tops the list of the ten best-selling albums for the week of January 6-12.In some ways, the list mimics the current Billboard 200, as eight out of 10 of the acts and artist on Zia's top sellers list are also burning up the charts.

If you're curious who else made the list, hit the break.

Department of Eagles, Crooked Fingers, and Marrianne Dissard Are Part of What's Selling at Stinkweeds Record Exchange

DOE2.jpg

Daniel Rossen (left) and Fred Nicolaus of indie outfit Department of Eagles.

Brooklyn folktronica duo Department of Eagles found themselves -- or, more specifically, their October release In Ear Park -- landing on a number of requisite year-end top 10 lists. Critics from Filter and NPR gave the disc its due, as did countless wags from across the music blogosphere, describing the songs of Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen (both of whom also star in the similarly-lauded folk band Grizzly Bear) as "an astonishing meditation on childhood" and "a soaring, dream-like reflection."

And now the album gets to be on one more list, namely the top 10 best-selling albums at indie record store Stinkweeds Music Exchange (12 West Camelback Road, 602-248-9461) for the week of December 29 to January 5. Click "More" for the rest of the list.

Neil Young (Circa 1968), The Clash, What Laura Says, And Pavement Are Just Some Of What's Selling At Hoodlums Music & Movies

NEIL YOUNG 1968.jpg
Neil Percival Young during the late '60s.

Here's some irony for you. In November 1968, future rock 'n' roll hall of famer Neil Young was paralyzed with fear before his solo show at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor. According to a recent NPR story on the music legend, he had gone Splittsville from his former band Buffalo Springfield and was crushingly nervous about taking to the stage at the Michigan music venue.

Ultimately, Young did go through with the performances, the NPR segment reported, which were recorded for posterity and are featured in their entirety on the reecently-released double-disc set Sugar Mountain - Live At Canterbury House 1968. It's gotten rave reviews, including four stars from Rolling Stone, and is the top selling album at Hoodlums Music & Movies, 6434 South McClintock Drive in Tempe, for the week of December 15-21.

If you're curious as to the other nine albums on the list, the info follows the break.

South Park Mexican, Ludacris, Britney Spears, and Lil Rob Are Just Some Of What's Selling At Circles Records & Tapes

spm photo.jpg
Carlos Coy (a.k.a. South Park Mexican): Sentenced to spend the the next four decades or so in the pokey.

The life of Texas rapper Carlos Coy (a.k.a. South Park Mexican) is a tale of triumph, terror, and tragedy.

As John Nova Lomax, current staff writer and former music editor for our sister publication Houston Press, exhaustively documented in his 2002 profile of Coy entitled "South Park Monster," Coy hustled his way from inauspicious life of a crack-dealing gangster to become a blockbuster rapper with sick lyrical flows, thousands of fans, and a major label deal.

The hip-hop artist's life then went directly into the shitter, as he was convicted in May 2002 of molesting a nine-year old girl and was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Despite the fact he'll probably be doing hard time until the middle part of this century (or possibly because of this fact), Coy's albums continue to sell phenomenally well. Many in his fanbase clamor for the dude's release from prison and his newest disc The Last Chair Violinist (the title of which refers to his prodigious talents on said instrument as an adolescent) has climbed up the Billboard charts since its release last month.

It's also flying off the shelves at Circles Records & Tapes, 800 North Central Avenue, as evidenced by its top position on the store's list of top 10 best sellers for the week of December 8-15. The rest of the list of what else is getting sold at the shop follows the jump.

Wesley Willis, Antony and the Johnsons, Bloc Party, and Ween Are Just Some Of What's Selling At Revolver Records

willis.jpg
The Daddy of Rock 'N' Roll (1963-2003)

The late Wesley Shabazz Willis was one of the coolest mofos in music.

The schizophrenic African-American musician (who refered to his psychotic episodes as "hellrides") sung howling songs set to keyboard music usually about such disparate subjects as McDonalds, Alanis Morrisette, and Spider-Man. If you were fortunate enough to meet him in person, the dude would likely give you a headbutt.

Willis developed a huge cult following with his outsider music and wild performances (particularly amongst the indie/alt-culture crowd) which seems to have gotten even bigger after his untimely death in 2003. So it's no surprise that his recently-released Greatest Hits album is the top seller at local indie music store Revolver Records, 4214 North 7th Avenue.

What else got bought at the shop during the week of December 1-7? Here's the rest of the list:

The Flaming Lips, The Cure, T-Pain, and Jedi Mind Tricks Are Some Of What's Selling at Zia Record Exchange In Tempe

By Benjamin Leatherman

Music editor Martin Cizmar totally digs the Flaming Lips funky new CD/DVD Christmas on Mars, and apparently so do the customers at Zia Record Exchange (105 West University Drive in Tempe). Here's the rest of the top 10 best sellers for the week of Nov. 10-Nov. 16.

Q-Tip, Of Montreal, Rise Against, And Lil Rob Are Just Some Of What's Selling At Zia Records In Phoenix

By Benjamin Leatherman

Since the global retail industry has decided in it's great wisdom that the day after Halloween is the official starting point for the annual Christmas season, we feel it's our duty to inform the public of the following: You've only got 43 shopping days left to track down gifts for your loved ones (so you better get a move on).

If you're hoping to get your nearest and dearest one of them hot new albums available for sale (but are so out of touch that you've no idea who's even hot right now), take a look at the top 10 best selling albums at Zia Records, 1940 West Indian School Road, for the week of Nov. 3-Nov. 9 to get the lowdown.

T.I., John Legend, Lil Rob, And Pink Are Just Some Of What’s Selling At Circles Records & Tapes

By Benjamin Leatherman

Hip-hop, R&B, and other urban jams have always been big sellers at Circles Records & Tapes, 800 North Central Avenue. So it’s only natural a majority of the shop's top 10 best-selling albums for this week are chartbusters from those genres.

papertrail.jpg

For instance, the No. 1 album is rapper T.I.'s blockbuster 18-track disc, Paper Trail. Here's a look at the rest of what's selling at Circles.

Kings Of Leon’s New Album And Leonard Cohen's Old Albums Are What's Selling Big-Time At Hoodlums New Store

By Benjamin Leatherman

Much like the mythical bird from which our ‘burg draws its name, popular record store Hoodlums has risen – quite literally – from the ashes. As Steve Jansen wrote in this week’s issue, the music emporium’s former location on the ASU campus was gutted by a tragic fire late last year.

But now the joint’s back and better than ever, as owners Kristian Luce and Steve Wiley have opened a new location in Tempe a few weeks back, and say business has been going “pretty good.”

Particularly, Wiley says, the sales of old-school discs from musicians like Leonard Cohen have picked up after renowned music critic Tom Moon read from his book 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die during his in-store appearance last month.

Hence, Hoodlums top 10 best-selling albums for the week of September 30-October 6 is a mix of both the old and new.

What’s Selling: Revolver Records

By Benjamin Leatherman

It’s a damn shame that in a city the size of Phoenix (the fifth largest in the nation last we checked) there’s a real dearth of cool independent music stores. But, hey, at least it lets us appreciate those scant few record shops that are available all the more. Like Revolver Records, 4214 North Seventh Avenue in Phoenix, and its enviable selection of both new and used music, with a large focus on viynl. Here’s a list of Revolver’s top 10 best sellers for the week of Aug. 4 to 10.

What’s Selling: Rockzone Records

By Benjamin Leatherman

Rockzone Records, 1721 East Warner Road in Tempe, isn’t your typical music store. It’s more of a haven for vinyl junkies like our music columnist Steve Jansen, who prefer their sounds to flow from an old-school needle and groove instead of some new-fangled iPod or CD player. Almost 90 percent of the Rockzone’s stock consists of albums on wax, so as such, a majority of their top 10 best sellers are records. Here’s a list of what’s getting bought (with an * indicating it’s the LP version).
