Vocalist/guitarist Masaki Murashita of Phoenix metal band Hemoptysis has a new toy to show off. He's recently been sponsored by Jackson Guitars and received a limited-edition EMG-X King V, which he'll be displaying at upcoming shows, including a November 21 gig at Mardi Gras in Scottsdale.

The band's also being honored as Metal Band of the Year at the 2nd Annual Phoenix Music Awards in Los Angeles at the Avalon Theater November 12. The awards show recognizes nearly 20 Valley bands, including Butcher Jones.

Hemoptysis is currently promoting their latest EP, Who Needs a Shepherd? The heavy EP, which the band describes as having a futuristic metal style that combines several sounds, includes the track, "Shadow of Death," a commentary of the Iraq War.

The hard rocking track is off their upcoming EP, Get Dead, released Nov. 17. This summer, the band was busy touring Europe, where they've garnered quite the fan base, having been named Best Newcomer by Germany's Heavy magazine.

BrandNewcover.jpg

Daisy, the forthcoming album from Long Island indie/hardcore band Brand New isn't out until next Tuesday, Sept. 22, but thanks to MySpace, you can check out the disc in its entirety before it drops next week. The band is streaming its fourth disc on their MySpace page.

After giving the stellar album a full listen, we can't wait to see them live next month. Like a fine wine, Brand New continues to get better with age. Be sure to check out tracks like "At the Bottom," "Gasoline" and "Daisy," the title track. You can also check out the guys performing "Sowing Season (Yeah)" from The Devil And God in the studio during the Daisy sessions here.

The band will debut some new material for an AZ audience when they headline Mesa Ampitheatre Thursday, Oct. 22. Manchester Orchestra and The Builders and The Butchers are also on the bill. Tickets are $24-$28 and show kicks off at 6:15 p.m.

Thrice to Play Secret Show at Clubhouse Music Venue on Monday

Thrice.jpg

SsshThrice is playing a secret show at The Clubhouse Music Venue this coming Monday, September 14 -- or a not-so-secret show if you've been on MySpace lately. We noticed the show was pimped all over the social networking powerhouse when we logged on earlier this afternoon.

The post-hardcore rockers are touring in support of their new album Beggars, which hits store shelves the next day on Tuesday, September 15. We're guessing the band will debut some brand new material during the show on Monday. Doors are at 7 p.m. for the clandestine, all-ages event, which will also feature a set by openers Aushua. The earlier you arrive, the more likely you will get to be apart of the secret fun.

Phoenix DJs React to Death of Adam Goldstein (a.k.a. DJ AM)

DJ AM RIP.JPG
DJ Steel shows his love for the late DJ AM on Saturday at Pussycat Lounge
The music world was stunned and saddened by the tragic and untimely passing of DJ AM (a.k.a. Adam Goldstein), who was found dead in his NYC apartment this past Friday. It's been reported that the 36-year-old superstar was the victim of an apparent accidental drug overdose.

The shockwaves from Goldstein's death reverberated through Phoenix's DJ community pretty hard, particularly amongst those who were friends and associates. Ironically, the news came within days of the announcement that AM was putting a free show at Tempe Marketplace on September 24.

Recent Valley ex-pat Fashen, who's a member of AM's Deckstar DJ collective/music label, began making posts to his Twitter account a few hours after his friend's death.

Violet Wild to Open for Fuel, Better Than Ezra

VW.jpg

Violet Wild have a couple of noteworthy shows on the horizon. The popular local pop-rock act will open for the once-popular rock band Fuel, who I didn't even know were still together until I passed a billboard at Tempe Marketplace earlier this week advertising a show on Friday Aug. 28 at Tempe Marketplace. When I shared this news via Twitter, one of my Tweeps said "how many times are they going to reinvent themselves?'' But I digress.

If you make it out to the show to see the "reinvention" of Fuel be sure to check out Violet Wild, who have been cranking out some solid new tracks during recent performances. The free show kicks off at 7 p.m.

In addition to opening for Fuel, Violet Wild will open for Better Than Ezra at the Marquee Theatre at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, a much better pairing. The band is offering pre-sale tickets for $10. You can stay posted on everything Violet Wild on the group's Twitter page. If you have to pick between the shows, I recommend Better Than Ezra. The guys always put on one hell of a performance.

Geek-Friendly Hip-hop Artist Maja Featured on FOX-10

majatron.jpg
Things just keep on rollin' for Vince Payne (a.k.a. Maja).

If you didn't catch Lauren Gilger's recent post on Chow Bella, the local geek-friendly hip-hop lyricist (who I wrote about back in 2007) was tapped by McDonald's to spit some rhymes for some TV and radio ads touting their summertime drink deals.

Payne was also interviewed by FOX-10's Yetta Gibson earlier this week about not only the commercials, but also his penchant for rapping about gaming, anime, and other nerdy topics.

Check out a YouTube clip of the interview, as well as some behind-the-scenes footage by clicking the link below.

Tempe12 Busted For Underage Drinking at American Junkie on Sunday

Thumbnail image for AJfor NT.jpg
R.I.P. American Junkie. You're in some hot water.
Two undercover police officers busted a few of the girls from the Tempe12, a local promotional modeling agency that often hosts bikini contests on Sunday's, outside the club a little before 9 p.m. Sunday. Did anything appear out of the ordinary? Not to the typical Dirty Scottsdale-douchey crowd who witnessed a soft-core porn act taking place on top of the bar. My sister and I arrived on the scene and had one drink (a grape vodka/soda) before we had the chance to watch the hot mess.

The scene: A male bartender, who had an obvious boner, taped two young girls together with hot pink duct tape and poured a bottle of beer on top of their chests and a bottle of liquor into their mouths.

Cevin Key of Skinny Puppy to DJ at Mardi Gras Bar & Grill Aug. 15

CevinKey.jpg

Skinny Puppy fans, get ready to rock. Cevin Key, a founding member of the industrial rock band Skinny Puppy, will headline Scottsdale's Mardi Gras Bar & Grill Saturday, Aug. 15 for a special DJ set packed with industrial jams. According to a flyer posted on the club's Web site, Key will spin music from his musical side projects such as PlatEAU and Tear Garden as well as Skinny Puppy.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 for presale and $20 at the door for the 18-and-older dance party, which will kick off with an opening DJ set from local mix master Plastic Disease.

Good With Grenades to Release New EP Aug. 10

GWGalbum.jpg

Local power-pop outfit Good With Grenades will release FBGM Monday, Aug. 10 nationally. The EP will be available on iTunes and in local record stores.

When asked what FBGM stands for, GWG guitarist Ryan Speer would only offer "something not appropriate ... A little gangsta spinoff. Leave it to speculation."

GWG have been gradually building up steam in the AZ and have made a name for themselves locally, often packing their shows. The guys played last month on the New Times Summer of Sound bill alongside Jim Adkins at the Tavern on Mill. FBGM is a follow-up to the group's EP Identity, which they released last year.

Want to hear some of their new tracks live? Check 'em out at the Venue of Scottsdale Saturday, Aug. 8 alongside Rookie of The Year, Hollywood Heartthrob and Nylon Pink for an all-ages show. Tickets are available on the band's MySpace page.

New Let Go Music on Split EP With The Story Changes

LetGoSplitEP.jpg

Jonesin' to hear some new Let Go music? Us too. Thankfully, the wait is over. The popular AZ pop-rock act has released a split EP with Dayton, Ohio two-piece indie act The Story Changes, who are friends of the band as well as past touring buddies. Just last weekend, the guys shared a bill at Last Exit

New Let Go tracks include "The Great Mistake," "Smoke & Mirrors," "Two Feet on the Fautline" and "You Got Lucky." You can hear "The Great Mistake" on the group's MySpace page. Let Go singer Jamie Woolford produced the disc, which  is available through The Future Destination Records Shop with free downloads of the MP3's when you purchase a CD.

Simon Rex/Dirt Nasty to Invade Martini Ranch Every Thursday Starting This Week

DirtNasty.jpg

Love him or hate him, there's no escaping rapper Dirt Nasty, otherwise known as actor Simon Rex. Rex has performed with Mickey Avalon and will be invading Scottsdale's Martini Ranch on a weekly basis for the club's new night Hustlerwood. You're welcome, Scottsdale. Rex seems to be a regular in the Dirty Scottsdale nightlife scene, often popping up at clubs like The Lodge or Dirty Pretty Rockbar. And now you can see him every week!

The new night, which kicks off Thursday, July 30, will feature live music, a wet t-shirt contest, guest DJ's and "celebrity" guests. We're guessing this will be a pretty D-List event but is sure to pack in the usual $30,000-millionaire club in Scottsdale. Most notable? Local guys Weird is the New Cool are set to perform on Thursday, Aug. 6 so we recommend heading out on that night to catch some real talent.

As for Rex, we're not sure what else he's doing these days. He had a stint in the porn industry several years ago, a gig on MTV and various acting projects. These days it seems he's pouring most of his dirty/nasty energy into the rap game.

Sadisco* Ceasing Its Monthly Parties (and Going Biannual) After October

blood.gif
There was a bloody good time to be had at this weekend's Lost Velvet - A Sadisco* Sequel at Homme Lounge. Click here to see more pictures of the event in our slideshow.

If you've never dared to attend any of the depraved dance throwdowns that have been presented once a month by Sadisco* over the past five years, you've only got three more opportunities to do so. After that, it will be awhile before you can thrash about to industrial or EBM tracks while surrounded by costumed freaksters, as the debaucherous DJ collective is ceasing its monthly affairs after October.

That doesn't mean that Sadisco (which is shorthand for the phrase "Sadistic Disco") is disappearing off the Valley's cultural radar, however, as these infamous party monsters will still continue to hold their whacked-out wingdings twice a year. It's something of a relief, considering that the outlandish events are some of wildest that the PHX has ever seen. (And we'd hate for things to get boring around these parts).

Each edition typically features a decadent celebration of both pop and fringe culture centered around a certain theme, such as the annual Fight Club Sadisco* (which will continue to take place be one of the two bi-yearly events). DJs such as Squalor, ///she///, or 5arah spun sets filled with hard-pounding music and industrial bands from across the country would also perform.

So what's the explanation behind the move? Squalor provided the details in a post to the Sadisco's MySpace discussion group earlier this month which provides all the answers.

Roveen Are Asking Fans For Donations to Help Them Buy a New Van

Thumbnail image for RoveenVan.jpg
Can you help replace this broken-down junker?

Local indie-rock outfit Roveen have hit a rough patch or so it seems from the writing on the wall, quite literally actually, their MySpace page. The transmission on their van, which they use for touring, died on their way to a recent show in San Diego.

"Our van is done for and we have to buy another," they posted in a MySpace bulletin. "However vans are so expensive. That's why we are asking for your help and we need it bad." The guys are asking fans for donations so they can tour. Without the van, they can't escape Arizona monsoons and this horrid triple-digit weather. If you make a donation, Roveen will five you a free CD. We imagine it's one of their's and not a Milli Vanilli classic. You will also get to sign your name on their van.

Donations are being taken at Roveen Management at 18202 N. 31st Lane, Phoenix, 85053.

Canada's Mother Mother to Play Rogue Bar Aug. 21

mothermother.jpg
Vancouver indie rock buzz band Mother Mother, who have been touring the festival circuit this summer, will bring their beautifully-crafted pop-rock melodies and vocal harmonies to the intimate Rogue Bar Friday, Aug. 21. Gospel Claws are set to open the 21-and-older show. Doors are at 8 p.m. and cover is $10. The group is currently touring in support of O My Heart, their 2008 sophomore effort, which Spin Magazine touted last year. The album also garnered the No. 3 Best Indie Album of The Year title on iTunes as well as No. 5 Best Albums of the Year and No. 3 Best Canadian Albums of the Year.

BET Bans Willy Northpole's New Video; Northpole Asks for Fan Support

sized_by hannibal matthews.jpg
Hannibal Matthews
Willy Northpole's new video gets no love from BET.
Everything seems to be falling in place for Phoenix hip-hop artist Willy Northpole: he's signed to an imprint on a major label (Island Def Jam's Disturbing Tha Peace, owned by Ludacris), his first album, Tha Connect, hit stores to favorable feedback on June 23, and his first video from the album "#1 Side Chick," has been getting play on MTV Jams. But there's one major snag in the success story so far: the BET channel is refusing to air the video.

Northpole's manager, Tiffany Johnson, says BET didn't like how the video portrays a man in a relationship with two women. Johnson says there's no anger in Northpole's camp toward BET, but the channel's decision "Kind of hurt, because they've shown a lot worse," she says. "I don't know how they can say we're portraying something unwholesome, because the video ends with the man marrying one of the women. I feel our video is tasteful. We were kind of offended. My first thought was 'Every Girl in the World' can get played, and we can't?"

(The video for Lil Wayne's "Every Girl" features the rapper carousing with a horde of scantily-clad women, and the song lyrics include about 18 occurrences of the F-word.)

Johnson says she and Northpole are trying to negotiate with BET to play "#1 Side Chick." In the meantime, Northpole's asking fans on his Twitter page to make their voices heard in BET's forum and ask that the video be played. Local artists and fans at Valley hip-hop forum Arizonabeats.com have also spoken out about the ban in their forum.

As of this writing, we've been unable to reach anybody at BET for comment. We'll update this post if and when we do.

Comfort for Change: New Video, Songs, Guitarist and Street Team

Thumbnail image for CFC.jpg

New video. New album. New guitarist. New street team. What doesn't Comfort for Change have up their sleeves these days? The guys recently posted a new video on their MySpace page and have announced that they will post some new songs in August from their forthcoming album to the page. And if you haven't heard, they also added a new guitarist, longtime band friend Boris Radovic, to the lineup after guitarist Anthony Gabuzzi left to pursue a career in music in a different direection.

"We are pretty excited to be working with him," the band states in a MySpace blog. "He is a great musician and will add a style to our songs that we don't think you will see coming but will enjoy it that much more."

If you're a fan of the band, the guys are looking for members for their new streett team to help them promote the band and their shows. You can sign up here.

Good With Grenades to Play at Desert Ridge and Meet and Greet With Fans at Hot Topic

GWG2.jpg

Good With Grenades will take a page from fellow popsters The Maine and appear at Desert Ridge's Hot Topic Thursday, July 2. The local band, who are hot off performing at the New Times Summer of Sound pop show last week at the Tavern on Mill and have quickly built a steady fanbase in the Valley, will rock outside the store at 7 p.m. on the District Stage. The guys then will hold a meet and greet with fans inside the store and sign autographs.

If you haven't heard the band, check out their MySpace page where you can hear some fun pop-rock tracks and an awesome cover of rapper Warren G's "Regulate."

The group will head north Saturday, Aug. 22 for a show  at NAU with Cute is What We Aim For on Saturday, Aug. 22 for a private show for the school's Lumberjacks.

Yellow Minute Returns to Yucca on July 3

YMuse.jpg

"Yellow Minute is the next big buzz band," Rodney Hu, owner of Tempe's Yucca Tap Room and one of my good friends, declared during a recent phone conversation of the AZ band. "Just watch. You'll see."

After catching some of the band's performance at Hu's bar last week where they opened for Black Carl, who have quickly becomes one of my new faves, I can't help but think he may be onto something. The indie pop-rock band is super catchy and they packed in a big crowd at the small venue where fans were singing along. Lead singer Sean Brennan, who Tempe local scenesters know from the now defunct Ember Coast, sounded stronger than ever in his vocals, proving that his sound has matured over the years from when he fronted Ember Coast.

Catch the band at Yucca Tap Room, Friday, July 3 for a free show before they get too big for their Arizona britches. I know I'll be there.

How PHX's Musicians and DJs Reacted to Michael Jackson's Death (Including Some Exclusive Jacko Mixes)

micah.jpg
Courtesy of Micah Elliott
Micah Elliot, AZPunk.com co-founder and drummer for local punk band Gun Fuck, during his childhood.
We learned about Michael Jackson's untimely passing yesterday afternoon in likely the same fashion that y'all reading this did: Twitter. In fact, as news of the King of Pop's death spread across the Web 2.0 tweetscape so fiercely that it caused the social media service to pull a major Death Star at certain points (i.e. explode into a massive ball of flame). Celebrities even got into some major spats regarding MJ, including a Twitter flame war between Fall Out Boy hunk Pete Wentz and Interweb gossip monger Perez Hilton.

There were also a few vitriolic tweets getting spat by some members of our fair city's DJ posse, particularly in the direction of the jocks of hard rock station KUPD, which (as they're wont to do) were making fun of Wacko Jacko's death.

What else was being tweeted about Jackson by PHX DJs and musicians? We compiled a list, which follows the break (along with some mixes of the pop icon's music).

UPDATE: Looks like our man Albert Ching (music editor at sister pub OC Weekly) had the same idea.

Robin Wilson to Return to Last Exit Tuesday for Second Intimate Performance

RobinWilson.jpg

Robin Wilson rocks out with his son, a young Gin Blossom-in-training, at a past show.

Hey Gin Blossoms fans, did you miss GB lead singer Robin Wilson and guitarist Scotty Johnson's intimate gig at Last Exit last Tuesday? Don't stress. Wilson will be doing a very similar show again Tuesday, June 30 to continue to raise funds for the Love Hope Strength Foundation, a music centric cancer charity. As we reported last week, the Gin Blossoms frontman is one of 30 musicians from around the globe who will climb Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro, the world's largest freestanding mountain, in the fall to raise money for the Love Hope Strength Foundation.

The second intimate Robin Wilson performance will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. and is free, however, donations will be accepted at the door for the charity. Wilson will perform a variety of covers along with a few Gin Blossoms' gems -- "Hey Jealousy" was one of the hits thrown into last Tuesday's set list along with covers from The Smiths and Cheap Trick. We recommend heading out to this show if you missed it the first time around. It's a rare treat to see Wilson acoustically and in such a small club.

Movies On Central Closes Without Warning

movies on central_sized.jpg

Not anymore.
It's lights out for the Valley's longest-running movie rental place catering to the gay and lesbian community. Movies On Central, which has offered a variety of indie, cult, and special interest flicks since 1995 (and won six New Times Best of Phoenix awards), is gone.

Doug Klinge, who owns the shop Unique on Central in the same plaza, says his employees called him last Thursday night to tell him there was a big U-Haul truck in front of Movies On Central. He says he arrived at Unique early on Friday to try and talk to Movies On Central proprietor Robert Foster, but by the time he finished with early-morning customers, the U-Haul, Foster, and Movies On Central were gone.

"Since then, I've had 10 to 20 customers a day ask what happened to Movies On Central," Klinge says.

And Klinge doesn't know. He says the owner of the property (Xavier Square retail center) told him they can't discuss the situation at all, and Klinge hasn't had a chance to talk with Foster yet.

We've left messages for both Robert Foster and the owners of the shopping center. We'll post more information as it becomes available.
