Charlie Levy hits Urban Legend status after about two decades of booking concerts in Phoenix.
In honor of the fifth annual Big Brain Awards, New Times is recognizing five Urban Legends, established creative pioneers who have made Phoenix a better, cooler place.

Leading up to the Big Brain Award announcement and Artopia on April 25, Jackalope Ranch, Chow Bella, and Up on the Sun will profile the legends. Up today: Charlie Levy.

Odds are if you've seen a concert in Phoenix in the last decade, Charlie Levy had something to do with it.

While running his own venue, Crescent Ballroom, he also books concerts through his promotions company Stateside Presents at almost every Phoenix and Tucson area venue, not to mention other venues around the state. Coming off the huge success of the sold-out Viva PHX festival, Levy reflected on Phoenix's music scene and what he has in store for the future.

Know anyone with a big brain? And by that we mean local creative types with big ideas, grand visions, exceptional projects, and major dreams. If so, we'd really like to hear about them.

It's all for our annual Big Brain Awards, which spotlights such inventive and innovative groups and individuals around the Valley and what it is they're doing. Every year since 2010, we've searched exhaustively those emerging creatives who are doing extraordinary things in the Metro Phoenix area. We're looking for artists, performers, musicians, designers, chefs, dancers, and anyone else who is helping bring about some next-level stuff on the local level or are the cusp of something major. And that's why they're Big Brains.

Carlos Reyes takes a sip of his coffee and smiles. It's a big smile, a totally unguarded one. Dressed in shorts and a Superman T-shirt, he blends in nicely with the Saturday morning Roosevelt Row Jobot crowd, plugging away on laptops and browsing open textbooks.

But it's a fair assumption that no one else in the room edits what many have described as "the Latin Pitchfork," and even safer to bet that no one in the room finds that particular comparison as funny as Reyes.

Ziggy Kennedy has a hard time defining the focus on his Internet radio program Dust Circuit Radio, but he's certainly enthusiastic about trying to pin it down anyway.

"I guess we focus on Americana and roots," the jovial 41-year-old laughs. "I sometimes say, 'If it has a banjo in it, I'll probably play it.'"
