Belle & Sebastian's first Phoenix show will take place at Civic Space Park in October.

UPDATE, October 7, 2014, at 11:41 a.m.: Ain't life grand? Due to expected rainfall, the Belle & Sebastian concert has been moved to Orpheum Theatre. How Civic Space Park functions as a concert venue is a question for another day.

Indie critical darlings Belle & Sebastian are playing their first-ever Phoenix show at Civic Space Park on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.

Wait, where?

That's right, Civic Space Park, the unimaginatively named home of that colorful Janet Echelman sculpture. The park is no stranger to the occasional local band, film screening, and other activities, but this is the first time in recent memory a band of national significance will grace the stage downtown.

Stateside Presents is booking the show. Head honcho Charlie Levy says that when the band reached out to him to set up a date for its first Phoenix show, they requested something different -- an alternative venue, or something that's not the norm.

"The Crescent [Ballroom, Stateside's downtown venue is] a block away, and we've spent many afternoons and evenings hanging out in the park," Levy says. "We were having lunch downtown and I said, 'Let's do a show here.'

"Not long after, I got a call from Belle & Sebastian wanting to play Phoenix."

Levy worked with the city and The Parks and Recreation Department to set up the show. He says the city, always eager to "activate spaces" and encourage people to go downtown, helped "cut through red tape" to make the show happen.

There will be a general admission area where people can set up blankets and do other outdoor-concert things directly in front of where the stage will be, Levy says. Towards the back is a raised, concrete platform where Stateside will set up chairs. There will be food trucks and beverages available as well.

Levy says Stateside has plans to book other shows at the park.
