of Montreal (Du Hot Club de Bizarre) - Crescent Ballroom - 5/8/2013
You didn't need to be an of Montreal fan to enjoy Wednesday night's headlining set at day one of Du Hot Club de Bizarre. The band's performance was part circus act and part acid trip, providing plenty of entertainment for the casual fan.
of Montreal's shows are always part performance art and part live music; this time frontman Kevin Barnes, performing "For Our Elegant Castle," took the outdoor stage at Crescent Ballroom riding this weird hydra horse/dog/lion thing. It got weirder.
Even though of Montreal played a short hour-long set, it was one of their best performances to date. The projections behind the band shifted between strange animations that looked liked they belonged on Adventure Time to crazy psychedelic imagery to superheroes with tiny heads. If Kevin Barnes or the performers ever bored the crowd (which was doubtful), the screen behind the band provided plenty of entertainment.
The short set focused fairly heavily on one of the band's most popular albums, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, with a few Skeletal Lamping tracks thrown in for good measure. "Gronlandic Edit" was well-received, but the crowd seemed to enjoy the tail end of the main set and the encore best of all, as the band performed "She's a Rejecter," "Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider," and "Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse."
The performers on stage with of Montreal were pretty strange. A monster fashioned out of stuffed animals and glowing eyes wandered the stage during "Chrissie Kiss the Corpse," while a ghost/dog hybrid thing got gutted by a dancer in a bird costume during "Olso in the Summertime."
Melissa Fossum This is just a thing that happened.
The night ended strangely patriotically, when a guy in a luchador mask and a red, white and blue skintight suit crowd surfed during "Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse."

Last Night: of Montreal at Du Hot Club de Bizarre at Crescent Ballroom.
Personal Bias: This was my third time seeing of Montreal and they've never disappointed.
The Crowd: Pretty drunk.
Overheard in the Crowd: "They must keep Morphsuit in business."
Random Notebook Dump: "You always have that one asshole with the iPad."
One More Thing: While browsing through other Du Hot Club de Bizarre photos, I stumbled across the hashtag "#idontknowwhatsgoingon." That seems to sum up of Montreal's set nicely.
