10 Best Punk Bars in Phoenix

This is only a taste of what happens to Yucca Tap Room when BroLoaf takes the stage.
6. Yucca Tap Room

The wooden walls and dim lighting of this Tempe dive bar feel like a Midwestern basement. Tucked away in a shopping center, this bar could be overlooked by casual observers but that doesn't mean the bar lacks an illustrious history. The Yucca has been home to a bevy of punk bands that have been active in the music industry for decades, including No Use for a Name, Pulley, Toys That Kill, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and BroLoaf's regular shenanigans, making it a staple in the local music scene. Better yet, the venue rarely charges a cover and the drinks are cheap. 29 W. Southern Ave. Tempe, 480-967-4777.

5. TT Roadhouse

This punk/biker-friendly bar is home to one of the best jukeboxes in the Valley. Selections from punk favorites like Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Dead Boys, X, Descendents, The Misfits and more are likely to be heard within an hour or so of sitting in this cozy neighborhood bar. TT's is one of the few places in town where patrons will gladly discuss the merits of GG Allin's "Bite It You Scum." 2915 N. 68th St. Scottsdale, 480-947-8723.

Agree Bob. Every week it's just more top ten lists. Boring. Next week it will be top ten Coachella .........insert something banal here. Thanks New Times. Very informative.

Should be called: Another worthless article by the New Times Music Staff. Seriously, do you have anything original or interesting to write about or just top ten lists that suck? And the writers don't really know much about the local scene. No mention of Meat Market in the Top Punk Bars? WTF? It's a BYOB anything goes venue with national punk bands, not just local wannabes. Or what about The Bunker. Same deal. Oh,,,,naive New Times Writers. The editor needs to completely revamp the music staff.

The origins of punk are not really debatable since the chronological history and influence are now factual musical history. Punk can be traced back to the mc5, iggy and the stooges, new york dolls, richard hell and the voidoids, and many others. The sex pistols fashion was hijacked from richard hell, the safety pins and violent shows by iggy pop. For someone writing about music for a living it should be obvious that these and others of their time are the origins of punk... the uk punks following in the earlier footsteps of the americans. Now if you want to debate what brought punk to the forefront of the music scene... than your points may have a point but otherwise you are way off base.

@BobMehr Hey Bob, Sound like you know what you're talking about. I move to Tempe from Detroit a couple years ago and would really like to discover the punk rock scene out here. Is the Meat Market still hosting bands? I'm in a couple punk rock bands and we'd really like to play there. I also could not find anything about the Bunker.....

@dlee23 Hey -- we added "quotes" around the word official, because the writer absolutely acknowledges the US roots of the musical style. I promise -- the writeup about an English punk bar is just paying tribute to the English punk bands that helped define the genre.
