Mindless Self Indulgence is truly an enigma, an exception to the rule, or "ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife." The band's so original that you can't place a tag on them or put them in a genre. The band paid a visit to the Marquee Theatre last night and blasted through 20 of their favorite poop and fart jokes, or "songs" as some fans may call them.

Almost everything about the band -- and its curious longevity -- makes very little-to-no sense, but don't tell that to the 6,927 Kickstarter backers that pledged $225,045 to pay for their latest industrial/rock/rap/whatever-you-call-it release How I learned to Stop Giving and a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence.

Decked out in white pants, a white tank top, and black fishnets lead singer Jimmy Urine got their rabid fan base moving with opener "Witness." "Shut Me Up" from 2007's You'll Rebel to Anything followed and featured some flexible rock moves from bassist Lyn-Z. "You're No Fun Anymore" couldn't have been further from the truth; MSI has been a career out of being fun.

"I'm very confused, why are we still trying to figure out if gays should be able to get married, what fucking year is it" Urine asked before "1989." He also asked, "Who here believes in God? Who here is born again? Well tell him to fuck off."

Ever the instigator, Urine also had fans hold up their cell phones and told them that they should call Jack White and tell him just to admit that he had ripped them off. For the encore Urine returned to the stage with a pink tutu for "Straight to Video," and guitarist Steve Righ? threw up twice in a garbage can backstage before the band could play "I Hate Jimmy Page."

The reference was probably lost on most of the young fans in the crowd. Not that they cared, they were too busy having fun.

Critic's Notebook:

Last Night: Mindless Self Indulgence

The Crowd: Young kids and older goths.

Overheard: Lead singer of the opening band The Iris took a quick stand, saying: "We love Jimmy Page." The crowd booed him, and one audience member yelled out, "You don't even know who Jimmy Page is."

Personal Bias: I guess you could call me a fan since I've seen the band more then five times.
