Local DJs to Pay Tribute to Depeche Mode at Rips This Weekend
Despite all the personal drama that's afflicted the members of the iconic British synthpop ensemble -- ranging from drug addiction to near-fatal health issues -- the band and its moody, electronica-laden songs have endured and remained relevant for more than three decades.
Both will be feted during "Policy of Truth: A Tribute to Depeche Mode," the latest edition of monthly New Wave/Britpop dance night Shadowplay on Saturday, March 16, at Rips Ales & Cocktails, 3045 North 16th Street.
Resident selectors DJ Manchester and Adrian Flanagan will be joined by DJs Forge, Neo Noize, and DJ Halo will spin tunes from throughout the band's lengthy discography, from 1981's Speak & Spell to their latest disc, Delta Machine, which drops later this month, in addition to Shadowplay's usual mix of retro and Euro hits.
"[Depeche Mode] is definitely a top 10 band," says Flanagan. "I like them more than The Smiths and a little less than The Cure. I will say that [they've] never put out a bad album. Some are better than others, but they're all solid."
Tickets to upcoming Luckyman and Stateside concerts will also be given away and PBR will be available for $2 a can. Find your own personal Jesus starting at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $3. Call 602-266-0015.
