Following up last year's New Times Soundcheck, a two-day festival at Club Red in Tempe -- which featured performances by The Love Me Nots, Sugar Thieves, 2 Tone Lizard Kings, Jason Devore, Skky Brown, The Insects, Crusher Sound System, and more -- was a serious task.

But challenges are cool, right? Up on the Sun is excited to announce a brand new event for 2013: Carnaval Eléctrico at Crescent Ballroom. On Friday, March 8, indie rock stalwarts Cold War Kids will be joined by psychedelic rockers Mergence, garage rocker Hanni El Khatib, and brooding alt combo In the Valley Below, with more acts to be announced in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of Cold War Kids announcing a brand new album, titled Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, scheduled to drop April 2.

The teaser video posted to the band's Facebook doesn't give a whole lot away, but the scarce sounds suggest that the followup to 2011's Mine Is Yours will feature the taut, piano-led indie rock that earned the band its many fans. In addition to the sneak at the new goods, the band is offering a set of downloads to fans, the band's covers of Depeche Mode's "Condemnation" and Anthony & The Johnsons' "Aeon," in exchange for a mere e-mail address.

Tickets for Carnaval Eléctrico go on sale Friday, January 18, at 10 a.m. via Crescent Ballroom's site. Limited tickets will be available for $10 during the first week of sales. After that, the price goes to $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event.

We'll bring more info as it comes. For now -- get psyched!

Cold War Kids, Mergence, Hanni El Khatib, In the Valley and more acts to be announced are scheduled to perform Friday, March 8, at Crescent Ballroom.

@Phxmusicdotcom That's too bad.  My 14-year-old really likes them but it sounds like he is going to be shut out altogether.

@Phxmusicdotcom Thanks.  It is a bummer because it means I probably won't get to go either.  Let those on high know that kids like to rock out too.  He's been to a number of shows at the Marquee like Cage the Elephant, Social D, Airborne Toxic Event, Middle Class Rut, etc. etc. and Tempe Town Lake like Flogging Molly and Randomonium, but it stinks that he's getting shut out of festivals like this.
