Coachella's "Bloom" Video: WTF Does it Mean?
Yesterday afternoon, the home page of the Coachella website changed to a video called "Bloom," which shows plants and art exhibits sprouting from the ground. Some look pretty creepy--did those worm/slug things 30 seconds into the video really just form a structure? At least the rest are fairly cute or interesting, with the balloon kites and glow sharks stirring some fond memories.
"Bloom" is a cool video and all, but what was the point of it? We have a few theories.
The significance of the word "bloom."
Sure, things are physically blossoming from the ground, but the word "bloom" has a bit of musical significance. Could that mean that Beach House is playing, since their most recent album is called Bloom? They seem like a logical prospect for the festival, anyway. What about Radiohead? The Black Keys played two years in a row, so Radiohead could be back for a King of Limbs-focused set. It's a stretch, but what if Paul McCartney will front Nirvana to sing "In Bloom?" Coldplay, Foals and Deadmau5 also have songs with "bloom" in the title.
...or some other hidden meaning.
This video is very tantric, maybe Sting will do some sort of weird sex dance, or better yet, The Police could be headlining. What about all of those big, phallic things sprouting from the ground? Maybe the headliners are all guys and it really is turning into #brochella.
Related videos on YouTube?
It's a stretch, but maybe The National, Titus Andronicus, Beach House, Radiohead, Beyonce, Matt Damon, Paramore, Black Lips, Mazzy Star and funny cat videos will make an appearance at this year's festival.
It's a way for Goldenvoice to kill time.
Insiders suggest that the line up hasn't been revealed yet because the festival is still trying to lock down a few bands. As previously stated, I'd take Stateside Presents' April calendar as a big hint of who is playing the festival. The xx and The Gaslight Anthem both announced Phoenix shows yesterday, making them the most recent additions to the rumor mill.
An intricate ploy to announce the return of the giant Tesla coil.
It was missing last year, which was a bummer. The Tesla coil was way cooler than the giant flower thing hanging out by the Outdoor stage, anyway.
Goldenvoice is just being a big tease.
Think about it, they can do whatever the hell they want and people will still buy Coachella tickets. Jack Johnson has headlined in the past, so there is always the off chance that parts of my horrible fake line up will be accurate...let's just hope for more Morrissey and Johnny Marr hugging it out and fewer juggalos.
The line up will be announced soon.
Last year, Goldenvoice posted a picture a week before the line up was released. Perhaps that means the line up will come out on the 29th...or maybe it will be posted an hour after you read this. Who knows.
