The New Die Antwoord Video Probably Isn't Racist You Guys. Probably. (NSFW)
Stereogum, you've got it all wrong. The new Die Antwoord video, "Fatty Boom Boom" isn't blackface. Sure, Yo-Landi Vi$$er is covered head to toe in some black grease get-up, but I seriously doubt she's doing it to poke fun at darker -skinned folks. She looks kind of like a panther and has cat eyes (although on closer inspection, those are dollar signs in her yellow peepers) or maybe she's supposed to be a candy bar in that dress.
OK, maybe this is totally racist, but then doesn't Vi$$er don a face full of white makeup in the very next scene? So isn't that technically "whiteface" or whatever? And I guess that makes Ninja's futball thing redface. I think that evens things out.
There are plenty more things to be offended about in this video, such as the signs in the background offering dick enlargement and "safe and quick" abortions. How 'bout those cartoon pajama kids with their doodly penises hanging out or Ninja grabbing his crotch and talking about blowing up America and pissing on "all the hard-up 'n fokken rap." Then there's the dead animals, tied up baby dolls, the Bible on fire and Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and other pop stars painted as the Satanic heads of some sort of Hydra monster. Seriously, how did all the other blogs miss this awesome shit? Yeah, plenty more things in this short film to make you cringe if you look harder.
Besides, don't ignore the most important part of this video: before getting eaten by a lion, Lady Gaga has a weird cricket monster pulled from the gooey lips of her vag. This dig at Mother Monster harkens back to March, when she invited Die Antwoord to tour with her. They laughed in her face. Thank God for music that stays true to itself like this, even if the notion of "self" is as elusive as Julian Assange.
