I have a confession to make. I've never taken Jane's Addiction all that seriously. I think it's largely due to guitarist and modern-rock caricature Dave Navarro. His dedication to choosing mascara over shirts remains laughable.

But you'd have a hard time convincing the crowd that the 27-year-old alternative band weren't kings, as the packed showgoers roared for an hour-long, greatest hits-style set.

Which isn't to say things went without hiccups. The band took the stage to Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" and launched into "Welcome to the Underground," from the band's latest, The Great Escape Artist. It became clear as the show progressed that frontman (and Lollapalooza maven) Perry Farrell wasn't quite on his A-game, slurring the words to some of the band's most popular songs.

Luckily, the band has that catalog to fall back on.

Nostalgic favorites like "Mountain Song" and "Just Because" followed, and the group made sure to kick the crowd energy up a few notches with "Been Caught Stealing." The crowd cheered as Farrell and Co. took seats onstage, complete with bongo drums and Navarro went acoustic.

What is so strange about BDSM footage? Can you say Madonna 90's era "shock factor"? YAWN ... but yet, still more AWESOME than this review!! Could somebody with some actual pop culture relevance do the next review please? It's obvious you sent some boring yupster-type whose idea if rebellion is buying coffee at the Fair Trade Cafe and probably never had good sex in his life.

This is the second time in less than two weeks I've noticed the quality of your reporting gone WAYYYYYyy down. Did you sell out to the Arpaio people or something? I have news for you ... Penzone can't save you from the Yuppie Apocalypse, any more than dissing Jane's Addiction at the State Fair.

Let me guess, you're voting for Obama because he's anti-war and you think Rolling Stone still speaks for rock 'n roll .... lol .... PUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS .... Jane's Addiction kicks more ASS than you will ever get in your boring, vanilla life ....

You know, it would be nice to at least send somebody along to do a review that actually had some familiarity with the band.  And, btw, Navarro is a killer guitar player.  Music fans realize that, mascara or not.

BTW, The AZ Republic ate the New Times lunch when it comes to reviews of the Janes' show.  You guys should be so proud.....the local lame megarag has somebody writing better rock show reviews than the supposedly cool alternative weekly.  It's like the roles are reversed and you guys are hiring the clueless interns that the Republic (sorry, AZ Central) passed on.  Oh, and irony alert: the guy that wrote that review over there used to work for you guys.  Ha!
