The Father Figures

Local punk vets The Father Figures have been pretty busy lately. The band is headed to the studio next week to record a full length album that will tentatively be released in mid-November. The trio has a couple of big shows to look forward to, sharing the stage with PiL and X before the end of the year.

In spite of The Father Figures' busy schedule, the band held a secret practice at Mods and Rockers last night, where they performed some new songs to an intimate crowd. Their set included "Plastic Passion," a Cure song that singer and bassist Tom Reardon has wanted to cover since 1985.

"That whole record [Boys Don't Cry] would be fun to play. We thought Robert Smith needed a father figure," said Reardon with a laugh.

The band doesn't play covers often. In fact, last night was the third time that The Father Figures played "Plastic Passion" live.

The band's second album should have a "soft release" by the end of the year, but the trio isn't planning a CD release show until February or so due to future events and the holidays.

The Father Figures' upcoming shows are pretty big. The trio performs with PiL at Marquee Theatre on Tuesday, October 30, and then the group shares the bill with X at Crescent Ballroom on Saturday, December 15.

"We played with X last year, and if you did not see that show, you need to come to this show," said drummer Bobby Lerma, "[They were] better than back in the early '80s, it was that good."
