Shawn Wolf is a Juggalo -- one of countless fanatics of rap outfit Insane Clown Posse. But outside of his punk appearance, there isn't that much that's unusual about the 31-year-old. Sure, he sports a three-inch goatee and his hair is buzzed into a slicked-back mohawk, but he's a remarkably normal guy: He's currently enrolled in online classes at Full Sail University, he encourages his kids to participate in sports, he likes to grill with Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, and he likes dogs (cat dander makes his tear ducts swell up).

Like any other Juggalo worth his salt, Wolf and his wife Esther made the trek from their home in Cottonwood to Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, two weeks ago for the annual Gathering of the Juggalos. The 1,545-mile drive proved to be extra-special as Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope unveiled "probably the biggest announcement of our career."

At the festival, the duo declared that they would be launching a lawsuit against the FBI for branding Juggalos a hybrid gang last year and aiding fans who have been adversely affected by the classification. Spin Magazine caught Wolf breaking down after the announcement, reporting, "He'd lost custody of his young son solely because of his ICP fandom." But that's not exactly accurate. "The magazine got it wrong," Wolf says. "They said I lost custody of my son. I did not lose custody of my son. Basically, I never had custody."

Wolf was only 15 years old when he found out Tammy Baxter was eight months pregnant. The two went to high school together and had hooked up at a party. "I ran into her when she moved back to Cottonwood, and I saw that she was pregnant," Wolf says. "She let me know that it might be mine, so we did a paternity test and confirmed it." For the first six months after the birth of his son, he tried to fill the role of teenage father, until Baxter decided to leave Arizona for California. Without much warning, she made the move, claiming she had a better job lined up.

The immediate years following the sudden disappearance of his son and his mother proved to be pivotal for Wolf. In that time, he stumbled onto the world of the Insane Clown Posse and their rabid following, and he battled a brief addiction to meth. When he was 21, he was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, a marijuana pipe, and a crack pipe. He claims the resin found in the pipes was used against him, but that he didn't actually have drugs on him at the time. He's been sober for 10 years now.

"As far as my criminal background goes, that made me who I am today," Wolf says without remorse. "I am a much better person now because of it."

Eventually, he tracked down Baxter's address, and began writing letters to his boy. The letters went unanswered. He even sent Christmas gifts, only to have them returned. Finally, Baxter reached out to him out of the blue asking for help and in the summer of 2008, Wolf was reunited with his son, now 12 years old. The visit went well and the parents agreed to have him visit again the following year. Instead, Baxter sent him to a boys' home and disappeared again shortly thereafter.

After that, Wolf remained in constant contact with the home and attorneys in an attempt to gain legal custody of his son. That meant succumbing to a background check and scheduling a visit with a social worker from the state of California. "I was all up for them looking up my criminal background, and knowing my criminal past," he says. "I'm trying to get custody of a kid; I knew all that stuff needed to be disclosed. Before their visit I put all of that on the table, and suddenly after their visit, my criminal background became an issue."

I, personally, know Shawn, and he is not a bad person, contrary to popular belief. So what is he likes a certain type of music? Does that give you the right to call him a " Lowlife piece of trash! " or anything else? You don't know him, and you don't know the entire situation.

I was looking up some things myself about child custody laws in Arizona, and according to this website http://www.jacksonwhitelaw.com/arizona-family-law/family-law-services/child-custody/ both "The environment at each parent’s home." and "any misconduct of either parent." can be considered in the decision process. Maybe try to really show them how you changed? Or how you tried to develop a relationship with your child many times?

You know I do not know much about "gang lists" but as far as "clown lists" the Arizona FBI is nothing short of a circus tent of clowns on the top of that list!  FBI special....very special agent Ryan Seese and super special agent Joe Gordwin...just off the top of the rainbow wig!

Dude, it's time to grow up. The only adult "clown" that wears make-up is Ronald McDonald. I agree with other posters, if you really want to be a father, toss the clown garbage away. Being over the age of 7 and still following "clowns" is silly. To me, being a grown man choosing a less than stellar (if you can even call it a) music group, is as foolish as NAMBLA voting a member "biggest pervert."

If this guy is serious about being clean, and being a father, I'm glad he's slowly being given that chance. I'm a Juggalo, and I have been for quite awhile. I won't deny that some Juggalos give us a bad name, but ICP themselves as well as REAL Juggalos don't consider those who acts as gang members or criminals part of what we are. The music is violent and angry, because that's the state of the world we live in. The music is THERAPY to people who have lived hard lives, from people who rose from the ashes and made themselves into something. "Let the music do the killing for you, you'll be alright" - ICP "Simple and Blunt" Those who see us as a violent street gang should listen to that song.Makes us makeup wearing faygo sprayers a lot less sinister.

i am not a fan of ICP but, for the social service to deny a son his father is a violation of that child's god given rights. and the fact that dude wants to be a father is refreshing ,to say the least. in a day and age where people want to get their rox off with out dealing with the repercussions.

keep up the good fight.

judge not  .

My only question to this guy is this: What means more to you: Your affiliation with ICP and being a Juggalo or being a father?

So far as this story goes, it seems the only thing standing in the way of this guy getting some custody of his son is the fact he is a Juggalo. If he packed up his ICP gear, redecorated his room and got rid of the Faygo, he could probably be approved for custody. But, he's too 'down with the Clown' to do that. I guess he really doesn't want to be a father, he'd rather just be a Juggalo.

Perhaps that is the best thing for the boy.

Oh no, they must be put at the top of the FBI's list of gangs.  They will never be removed.

@ Shadow Coleman-Steward: since the custody case is still on-going, I'm not going to go into specifics. However, I will say that Shawn's "idolization" of ICP is not the sole factor in the decision made by CPS.

Shawn appears to have an addictive personality and should seek counseling.  Stenciling your belly with Juggalo isn't a sign of good mental health.

I used to be really big into this scene back from like the mid 90's all the way to about 2003 and got tattooed along the way and it sucks because something I was into 10 years ago could get me on a list with actual criminals. With the risk of sounding like an old man, the kids today just aren't the same. I did meet some really cool people, respectful people. On the same hand I met some mindless fucking retards along the way as well. What I'm basically saying is every band has a mixed fanbase, some good some bad. Its just sucks when those few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

FYI for Cheryl Pedroche: When you tag something on Facebook you can't edit it. But thanks for editing our grammar on Facebook -- otherwise known as the last bastion of the perfect sentence. Oh, and you might want to check your use of the semi-colon.

Lmfao the reason Kiss fans aren't considered a gang like Juggalos is because Kiss doesn't make hateful music or music about commuting crimes. Also, enough Juggalos have been arrested doing shit ICP's music talks about while wearing full on Juggalo gear, how is it that hard to understand why they are considered a gang? Also, I HATE Kiss & ICP with a passion so I'm not defending Kiss. Just pointing out the obvious.

Music and its fans are one thing, for example The Grateful Dead & their "Deadheads". They weren't classified as a "gang". But there is SOOOOOO much more to this particular story.

Thank you for this article.  I believe this is one of the few articles that shows the essence of being a Juggalo.  This is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of a man owning up to his past, and not letting himself be a victim of it.  Best of luck to Shawn and his family.  MCL    - Mike

Hey, buddy, shut the fuck up and have some respect. You may not agree with his lifestyle, but Juggalos are NOT a gang, and supporting such a bullshit decision by the FBI isn't only Anti-Juggalo, it's anti-freedom.

@mwilliams685 Why would anybody want to glorify and give recognition to any criminal street gang?  This guy should have his tattoos removed with sand paper.  Or better yet he should be shot in the head to end his miserable life.

@dustyjerry @mwilliams685 @JoeArpaioFan What I know of JoeArpaioFan is he: Loves Joe Arpaio | Glorifies the tea party | Wants land mines on the border to kill people trying to cross (men, women, children... doesn't seem to matter)| Wants someone shot in the head in this article (not sure why)... seems to me to be a pretty violent person. JoeArpaioFan I have a few questions. Are you part of the tea party? Do they look up to you? Are they all as violent as you are? Should the tea party be classified as a gang?

dustyjerry

@mwilliams685  @JoeArpaioFan Not bitter. Ignorant. Has no idea what a Juggalo is and automatically assumes it has to do with a street gang. Hmm.. he's a Joe Arpaio fan... so that makes him ignorantly bitter.
