Shawn Wolf is a Juggalo -- one of countless fanatics of rap outfit Insane Clown Posse. But outside of his punk appearance, there isn't that much that's unusual about the 31-year-old. Sure, he sports a three-inch goatee and his hair is buzzed into a slicked-back mohawk, but he's a remarkably normal guy: He's currently enrolled in online classes at Full Sail University, he encourages his kids to participate in sports, he likes to grill with Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, and he likes dogs (cat dander makes his tear ducts swell up).

Like any other Juggalo worth his salt, Wolf and his wife Esther made the trek from their home in Cottonwood to Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, two weeks ago for the annual Gathering of the Juggalos. The 1,545-mile drive proved to be extra-special as Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope unveiled "probably the biggest announcement of our career."

At the festival, the duo declared that they would be launching a lawsuit against the FBI for branding Juggalos a hybrid gang last year and aiding fans who have been adversely affected by the classification. Spin Magazine caught Wolf breaking down after the announcement, reporting, "He'd lost custody of his young son solely because of his ICP fandom." But that's not exactly accurate. "The magazine got it wrong," Wolf says. "They said I lost custody of my son. I did not lose custody of my son. Basically, I never had custody."

Wolf was only 15 years old when he found out Tammy Baxter was eight months pregnant. The two went to high school together and had hooked up at a party. "I ran into her when she moved back to Cottonwood, and I saw that she was pregnant," Wolf says. "She let me know that it might be mine, so we did a paternity test and confirmed it." For the first six months after the birth of his son, he tried to fill the role of teenage father, until Baxter decided to leave Arizona for California. Without much warning, she made the move, claiming she had a better job lined up.

The immediate years following the sudden disappearance of his son and his mother proved to be pivotal for Wolf. In that time, he stumbled onto the world of the Insane Clown Posse and their rabid following, and he battled a brief addiction to meth. When he was 21, he was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, a marijuana pipe, and a crack pipe. He claims the resin found in the pipes was used against him, but that he didn't actually have drugs on him at the time. He's been sober for 10 years now.

"As far as my criminal background goes, that made me who I am today," Wolf says without remorse. "I am a much better person now because of it."

Eventually, he tracked down Baxter's address, and began writing letters to his boy. The letters went unanswered. He even sent Christmas gifts, only to have them returned. Finally, Baxter reached out to him out of the blue asking for help and in the summer of 2008, Wolf was reunited with his son, now 12 years old. The visit went well and the parents agreed to have him visit again the following year. Instead, Baxter sent him to a boys' home and disappeared again shortly thereafter.

After that, Wolf remained in constant contact with the home and attorneys in an attempt to gain legal custody of his son. That meant succumbing to a background check and scheduling a visit with a social worker from the state of California. "I was all up for them looking up my criminal background, and knowing my criminal past," he says. "I'm trying to get custody of a kid; I knew all that stuff needed to be disclosed. Before their visit I put all of that on the table, and suddenly after their visit, my criminal background became an issue."

Alright I am the boyfriend of Shawn Wolf's daughter. When I first started dating her, I absolutely hated Shawn and his wife Esther. I had never met them, but Shawn's mother kept telling me all these awful stories of how Jade would keep coming home to her after being at their house and she would be beat and raped and shit. She kept telling me about all these three ways that Shawn and Esther would have in front of Jade. So ya, as a boyfriend who loves and cares very deeply for and about his girl, I was absolutely enraged when I heard about all of this. But then I met Shawn and Esther. And I noticed they weren't the type of people who would do shit like that. They loved their kids very much and I could tell by the facts that they stood up for them against anyone, they spend family quality time playing video games, dying Easter eggs, playing board games, etc. together every weekend, they even have offered their kids many times to let them live with them, buy them gifts, etc. Sure they both may have made some really dumbass decisions in the past. But who the hell hasn't? Shawn has stopped all drugs except smoking, is going to college to pursue a good life for himself, is very loyal and great to his wife, spends a ton of quality time with his kids, and is a great guy overall. I'll admit that he could perhaps find a better band to listen to than ICP, but that's his choice and not anyone else's. Look at Justin Beiber and the shit he's pulled. Spitting on loyal fans, defacing property, urinating on public property cursing out Bill Clinton obviously stoned as hell, shit even Eminem offered to take him under his wing because he was worried about where Justin was headed in life. If Eminem's offering that shit, this kid has really gotta be fucked up. Yet not one person has ever been truly bashed, not granted custody of their kids, or anything else just cuz they have posters of him in their room. Thousand of girls listen to Justin, a guy who is an extremely awful role model and rude arrogant prick, but no one has ever blamed any sort of crime of others on him. How is it fair then to say "Oh, you like a certain band? Must be a criminal." Seriously?! That's going back to the times of Salem Witch Trials where they said "Oh, you don't exactly fit in with normal society? Must be a witch." Shawn and Esther both are great people and deserve custody of their kids more than the old, manipulating, conniving, bitchy cunt that their kids are living with now. The person they're living with now won't allow them to get a job BECAUSE it will take away from her social security benefits. Shawn and Esther on the other hand encourage them to get jobs. The person they're living with now is near the point of death. Shawn and Esther are both young enough to be able to do everything a parent should be able to do, and will be able to live a lot longer to help their kids out longer. The person they're living with now is just a useless waste of skin who cares about her lawn that she spends more time taking care of than the kids she is supposed to be raising, yet Shawn and Esther put things aside and play games and do activities with their kids. It doesn't take much brains to see why Shawn and Esther would be better parents than the bitchy cunt the kids are living with now.

this is shawn's son that u have been talking about. yes my dad could've chosen me and put everything away, but that wouldn't be who he is. ICP has helped him through some tough times. I do not hold my father for this choice and I would like it if u would all stop this stupid shit. u have ur life do not worry about mine.
In the time ive been in AZ, I have had time to bond with my father and he has given me lessons on making beats. I write rap lyrics so it means a lot to me that he does this. he does his best to try to be in my life as much as possible.
my father is following his dream to be in the music business and make something of what he has. ICP has been his main ticket and inspiration to do this. ICP has helped and allowed my father to make beats and stuff for them.
like I said, I do not hold my father to the decision he made. he did what he thought was best and I agree with it. he stands for what he believes in and in my eyes, that's the best role model in the world.
I would appreciate it if u can all stop and this can be taken down so it causes no more problems.

What the fuck do all of you know, Shawn happens to be my father, and you know what? Juggalos are the most accepting people in the world, look at all of you judging and discriminating a man who wears band merch, if ICP is a gang then so is Justin Beiber fans, and all that other shit you people listen to. Juggalos have bigger hearts than anyone in society, we look out for each other and stand for what we believe in, its wrong to say we are a gang just because of some idiots acted out and were wearing a hatchet man shirt. Society needs to open their eyes, we are a community and we are closer than anyone person ever will be, I speak for all juggalos and juggaletts, you people don't know anything about the situation. My dad is a great father, and I'm glad that he is my dad. I wouldn't trade him for any of your sorry excuses for parents.

I, personally, know Shawn, and he is not a bad person, contrary to popular belief. So what is he likes a certain type of music? Does that give you the right to call him a " Lowlife piece of trash! " or anything else? You don't know him, and you don't know the entire situation.

I was looking up some things myself about child custody laws in Arizona, and according to this website http://www.jacksonwhitelaw.com/arizona-family-law/family-law-services/child-custody/ both "The environment at each parent’s home." and "any misconduct of either parent." can be considered in the decision process. Maybe try to really show them how you changed? Or how you tried to develop a relationship with your child many times?

You know I do not know much about "gang lists" but as far as "clown lists" the Arizona FBI is nothing short of a circus tent of clowns on the top of that list!  FBI special....very special agent Ryan Seese and super special agent Joe Gordwin...just off the top of the rainbow wig!

bigblackclock84
bigblackclock84

Dude, it's time to grow up. The only adult "clown" that wears make-up is Ronald McDonald. I agree with other posters, if you really want to be a father, toss the clown garbage away. Being over the age of 7 and still following "clowns" is silly. To me, being a grown man choosing a less than stellar (if you can even call it a) music group, is as foolish as NAMBLA voting a member "biggest pervert."

If this guy is serious about being clean, and being a father, I'm glad he's slowly being given that chance. I'm a Juggalo, and I have been for quite awhile. I won't deny that some Juggalos give us a bad name, but ICP themselves as well as REAL Juggalos don't consider those who acts as gang members or criminals part of what we are. The music is violent and angry, because that's the state of the world we live in. The music is THERAPY to people who have lived hard lives, from people who rose from the ashes and made themselves into something. "Let the music do the killing for you, you'll be alright" - ICP "Simple and Blunt" Those who see us as a violent street gang should listen to that song.Makes us makeup wearing faygo sprayers a lot less sinister.

ericdutcher
ericdutcher

i am not a fan of ICP but, for the social service to deny a son his father is a violation of that child's god given rights. and the fact that dude wants to be a father is refreshing ,to say the least. in a day and age where people want to get their rox off with out dealing with the repercussions.

keep up the good fight.

judge not  .

My only question to this guy is this: What means more to you: Your affiliation with ICP and being a Juggalo or being a father?

So far as this story goes, it seems the only thing standing in the way of this guy getting some custody of his son is the fact he is a Juggalo. If he packed up his ICP gear, redecorated his room and got rid of the Faygo, he could probably be approved for custody. But, he's too 'down with the Clown' to do that. I guess he really doesn't want to be a father, he'd rather just be a Juggalo.

Perhaps that is the best thing for the boy.

Oh no, they must be put at the top of the FBI's list of gangs.  They will never be removed.

@ Shadow Coleman-Steward: since the custody case is still on-going, I'm not going to go into specifics. However, I will say that Shawn's "idolization" of ICP is not the sole factor in the decision made by CPS.

Shawn appears to have an addictive personality and should seek counseling.  Stenciling your belly with Juggalo isn't a sign of good mental health.

I used to be really big into this scene back from like the mid 90's all the way to about 2003 and got tattooed along the way and it sucks because something I was into 10 years ago could get me on a list with actual criminals. With the risk of sounding like an old man, the kids today just aren't the same. I did meet some really cool people, respectful people. On the same hand I met some mindless fucking retards along the way as well. What I'm basically saying is every band has a mixed fanbase, some good some bad. Its just sucks when those few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

FYI for Cheryl Pedroche: When you tag something on Facebook you can't edit it. But thanks for editing our grammar on Facebook -- otherwise known as the last bastion of the perfect sentence. Oh, and you might want to check your use of the semi-colon.

Lmfao the reason Kiss fans aren't considered a gang like Juggalos is because Kiss doesn't make hateful music or music about commuting crimes. Also, enough Juggalos have been arrested doing shit ICP's music talks about while wearing full on Juggalo gear, how is it that hard to understand why they are considered a gang? Also, I HATE Kiss & ICP with a passion so I'm not defending Kiss. Just pointing out the obvious.

Music and its fans are one thing, for example The Grateful Dead & their "Deadheads". They weren't classified as a "gang". But there is SOOOOOO much more to this particular story.

Dude.. look at your name. Big black clock? Like the extra l in the last word is supposed to fool anyone to make us think its not inappropriate? If its time for Shawn to grow up, it's time for you to as well. Also, "the only adult "clown" that wears make up is Ronald McDonald" is not true. Haven't you ever been to a carnival or anything? Haven't you seen people getting paid to dress up like clowns and entertain children? Now about ICPs talent, I agree with you on that to some degree. But think a little before you speak

schilljesse

@StotheizzE Why the fuck should he have to change his music preference just to take care of a kid like the two have anything in common? I'm huge into Eminem but that doesn't make me a white angry wife abusing murderer. In fact I'm also a Disney loving, huge hearted, sweet guy who stands up for his loved ones and protects them against anyone. So why should music preference even be considered when it comes to custody of kids?

Hey, buddy, shut the fuck up and have some respect. You may not agree with his lifestyle, but Juggalos are NOT a gang, and supporting such a bullshit decision by the FBI isn't only Anti-Juggalo, it's anti-freedom.
