Pet Shop Boys' New Release Rivals Muse's Official 2012 Olympic Anthem

Where we're going, we don't need roads; just a synthesizer, eyeliner, and a touch of androgyny. Welcome to Flashback Friday.

It's been 27 years since the release of the Pet Shop Boys first international hit, "West End Girls," but vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe continue to make synth-pop tunes as if their lives depended on it.

Although Muse's latest single, "Survival," was selected as this year's official Olympic anthem, PSB's newest single, "Winner," released earlier this week, easily could have been an appropriate theme song. Both tunes speak to the trials of athletes, with Muse's track taking a more epic arena-rock approach, while PSB sticks to an airy ceremonial synth-backed tune.

"You're a winner, I'm a winner, let's enjoy it all while it lasts," Tennant croons. "Winner" is the first single off of the duo's new album, Elysium, scheduled to drop on September 17.

It may not be as compelling as Muse's rocker, but PSB is sticking to what they do best: creating lavish melodies, rich arrangements, and dapper ditties.

"Survival's" lyrics strike a similar tone as "Winner" with Matthew Bellamy singing, "Race, it's a race, and I'm going to win, yes I'm going to win." It has that "Eye of the Tiger" gusto every sports song should have.

What do you guys think? Did the powers that be get it right?

I generally like a lot of what the Pet Shop Boys do (2009's 'Love, etc.' was excellent), but this song is tripe. Unfortunately, so is the Muse song. Overproduced Queen fail w/opera overtones over bad Slash guitar? How can that be construed as any type of singalong? Ugh. The Brits should asked Pete Shelley to write a rousing anthem. Rotters.

Wow - what a terrible mistake someone has made. The Muse tune is awful (potentially just bad enough to be our next Eurovision entry!). Please don't let anyone outside of the UK think this is our best shot at an Olympics tune. PSB get Gold, Silver and Bronze - with Muse disqualified.

There are strong rumours about Pet Shop Boys performing during the closing ceremony, after Robbie Williams cancelled his performance because his wife is expected to give birth to their first child around that day.

I must admit that I am a massive PSB fan, but that aside, "Winner" transcends generational boundaries and is definitely the most heartfelt anthemic song perfect for the 2012 Olympics.
