The cello is a tremendously under used instrument, but perhaps that's a good thing. In most cases, the scarcity of the instrument makes a band's sound that much more interesting. This is the case for Avery, whose unique sound derives from a cello, a talented vocalist, and a semi-acoustic sound.

"Damien Jurado is a huge influence for both Brad [Mitchell, guitarist] and I. [Disclosure: Mitchell is the brother of New Times music editor Jason Woodbury.]

The album it's off of, Caught in the Trees is heavily cello influenced, so once I heard that for the first time, I was like, shit man, this could really work for us based on the cello and harmony parts," says singer/guitarist Mariah DeRaet, "it just seemed like a natural fit for us."

Avery has a couple performances left in its July residency at Long Wong's at the Firehouse. The band's next show is Tuesday, July 24 with Dylan Pratt, Sundress, Velvet Elvis, and Emeth.

Avery's version of "Everything Trying" switches the male and female vocal parts and ended up being a bit more upbeat than the original. Check it out.
