Three Nerd Concerts to Celebrate Phoenix Comicon
Don't worry. We're not going to break your glasses this time. We just want to tell you something. You probably already know Phoenix Comicon is going down next week at Phoenix Convention Center. You probably have your costume already planned out, and you're in luck: So do some of the nerdiest local and national musicians, and they'll show off the goods as they prepare to totally rock out with their Spocks out.
Friday, May 25: "Star Wars Turns 35" with Manual Sex Drive, Family Secret and Mission Creeps -- Rip's Ales and Cocktails
You don't need a Comicon pass to get into this one because, well, it's about four miles from Phoenix Convention Center. It's not quite a galaxy far, far away, but it might be worth it to make the trek to Rip's to show off your sick Jabba costume. After all, you've been consuming 7,000 calories a day just to fit into it. Locals Manual Sex Drive and Family Secret, along with Tucson's Mission Creeps, hold down the fort. Or should we say ship? No. Too many puns.
Saturday, May 26: Snubby J, Mega Ran and Minibossses -- The Renaissance Salon
Head out of Comicon seminars and into the contained nerd party at The Renaissance Salon, where the battle between CAPCOM and Marvel continues in concert form, featuring Blue Man Group-inspired PVC pipe tube player Snubby J, fresh off an appearance on America's Got Talent. Mega Ran blended 8-bit beats from video game series "Mega Man," which led CAPCOM to give Ran a special licensing agreement, thanks to the justice he did with the songs. Wrap up the night with legendary local video game cover band Minibosses. You'll need a Comicon pass to get anywhere near this geekfest.
Friday, May 25: A Life of Science CD Release and Comicon Costume Party - Rock Bar
They call themselves "electronic multimedia rock," and, yeah, that pretty much sums it up. The Phoenix band will release their latest record, Vita Nova, and their accompanying novel. Yeah, novel, called A Life of Science: The Apneist. Break out your best costumes for a chance to win a $100 gift card from Pop Culture Comics.
All right -- live long and prosper, ya nerds.
