The Serene Dominic Show: David Bash of International Pop Overthrow
In 1998, after grunge ground down and MTV flirtedwith electronica before getting completely in bed with reality TV, David Bash founded the International Pop Overthrow Festival to give support to a fractured pop scene that had probably given up all hopes of being signed to a major label since The Posies' option wasn't renewed. 
Since that first festival was held in Los Angeles, domestic operations have expanded to Canada and Liverpool, England and domestically to cities such as Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver and Phoenix in 2009, which is when I conducted the vidcast interview we exhume from my dusty vaults. In part one, Bash gives us a little history of the festival while standing right outside Hollywood Alley which has free wi-fi so if you're standing there right now right where we were then, you can see still see us. Ain't technology remarkable?
In part 2, we use the Rate My iPod segments to see what kinds of acts would make the cut for a future International Pop Overthrow lineup. Will Bash choose a brass band, Chad & Jeremy, or Henry Rollins? Stay glued to your seat for the actually-not-so-shocking answer! While in the past the roster may have leaned heavier on Beatles/Beach Boys/Big Star influenced bands, the Festival has always been more flexible than that and this year's Hollywood Alley lineup allows for smart and melodic singer songwriter fare from Cait Brennan and Ed Masley (appearing without The Breakup Society this go-round) and bands like Source Victoria and Hey Pilgrim, which have big melodies and hooks galore but coming at them from a darker, more twisted place than The Greenberry Woods.
