Breaking News: Clubhouse Music Venue Closes Down

We've received word this afternoon that the Clubhouse Music Venue was shut down earlier today. While no word of the concert hall's closure has been posted on its website or Facebook page, New Times confirmed with concert promoters that it is no longer in operation.

One promoter, who spoke with New Times on the condition of anonymity, states it received an e-mail from the venue's management about the closure earlier today. The Horse & Hound Sports Bar, which is adjacent to the Clubhouse and operates under the same liquor license, is believed to still be open.

California-based promoter Sean Healy Presents announced on its Facebook page that this weekend's performance by hip-hop artist Asher Roth (which was to take place at the Clubhouse) has been moved to Rocky Point Cantina. More than two dozen other upcoming concerts were scheduled for the venue, although no word has surfaced if said shows will be moved to new venues or cancelled outright.

The closure of the beleaguered concert hall, which has come under investigation by the City of Tempe in regard to its security since the gang-involved shooting in its parking lot on March 2, comes less than 24 hours after a town hall meeting where Clubhouse allies voiced their support.

The closure is the latest development in the maelstrom of drama that's developed since the shooting. Owner Eugenia Ruven was arrested and cited on Friday for failing to adhere to the establishment's security plan, which was also revoked by city officials late last week.

Calls to Ruven, who has run the Clubhouse since it opened in 2004 (and -- according to scuttlebutt -- has been trying to sell it in recent years), had not been returned as of this writing.

The Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control also reportedly has been conducting an investigation into the Clubhouse for possible violations of its liquor license.

An administrative hearing on its use permit was scheduled to take place on April 3.

While the exact reason for the Clubhouse's closure hasn't been determined, it's a safe bet that any of the above are the culprit.

Stay tuned for more info on the situation as it develops.

Security or not--the shooting was gonna happen either way.  How many times do people commit crimes in courthouses knowing there is armed security?  How many times do people commit crimes with police officers present?  Not even four security guards would have stopped a crime that was bound to happen and the was rooted in some festering prior situation.

yeah totally not sad that place shut down it was a crap hole!!! Hot as fu*k in there the place is not equipped with industrial AC for the size of that place, the shows I saw there I couldn't enjoy because I didn't want to drink so that I didn't have to use the crappy bathrooms, just a dump all around there are much better venues in the valley that throw a little more money into there establishment to make it a little nicer for there patrons. And yeah, hosting a show with a performer who's a gang member, is the owner a fool???? It's sad people were hurt, but they should have some sense when booking this show and the owner of the clubhouse should have upgraded that place a long time ago it's a sh*t box. Glad it's gone that place SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a shame New Times is not reporting on cruatial points that were made at the Tempe town meeting:( I was there The city of Tempe and police should be ashamed and embbarassed.Im suprised New times is not reporting the full story and has not told the public the meeting with 400 plus attending ended 1 hour early because the city could not handle the amount of embbarassment from resident concerns, eyewittness reports and their own admission of failure. I expected better coming from New Times shame on you for contributing to the distortion of facts to help save the city and police from embbarassment at the expense of an innocent small business and music venue which was a big part of the music scene. You are no different than the other major media outlets. Well i guess the 400 plus people that attended the meeting will have to tell the real story.Gota love the internet!

nipsey hussle (the act that yielded the major shooting a few days ago) is a confirmed member of tbe California Crips, and celebrates this as a core theme in his music, and surrounds himself with crip members. If you want to be a crip, fine, but be aware what comes with it, be you the joinee or a promoter putting a crip faction up on stage for a night.

What all of you re missing is history.  The Liquor Board has a
history of exaggerating problems to hit their real target: hip hop.

Chaser's had a shooting this weekend, but because it caters to a day crowd, you probably won't hear as much.

10-15 years go, the liquor board went on a rampage against anyone who
even occasionally catered to hip hop.  The Roxy Theater, Jockey Club,
Electric Ballroom and several other clubs were shut down.  Look it up.
There was a nice club on Scottsdale and McDowell that was just harassed
into closing. Most AZ clubs have kept low profiles on rap because of the
heavy hand that can be dealt.

Tempe PD is not sophisticated enough to find the "second shooter," so
they will try to put a hangman's noose around Eugenia's neck so they
can have a trophy.  Part of their problem is a lack of "no loitering"
signs.  Like that would change anything.  Ever think the 7-11 has people
drinking in the parking lot?

Did anyone else notice that they stopped talking about the 2 police cars in the lot at the time of the shooting?  LAME-O!

I'm totally inclined to believe that this is a result of the owner cheaping out - as I've been to a few shows in the summer at the Clubhouse - and it was ONE HUNDRED and FUCKING TEN DEGREES INSIDE THE FUCKING VENUE.  Not a one time thing - read reviews on Yelp, etc.  Their shit wasn't together, now they're closed.  Fuck'em.

with a name like benjamin leatherman, it would be awfully easy to be labeled a tool, but he's done an okay job with the facts (except for the victims' status), without needing to mix in any libtard slant. he hasn't even brought up the institutionalized white racism that's ultimately responsible for this tragedy. as for the shooters, you really can't blame them, society made them, they're underprivileged and abused, perhaps a little bit confused.

BLAME BLACKIE AGAIN

I used to work for THE event security company (at the time) in Tempe. We provided security for concerts across the valley, as well as at some shows at smaller venues, and on Mill Ave, etc. We also provided security at least 3 nights a week at Club Rio. (Anyone remember that place?) I wasn't a security guard BTW, I was a member of management who at times worked security shifts. One Thursday night, which was always a busy night there, 2 dudes got into a fight in the parking lot. As myself and a couple of other people were responding to the fight, shots were fired by one of the 2 idiots fighting. To break the important facts as related to the Clubhouse:

1. There was more than enough security there.
2. There were off-duty uniformed police officers there, as there always were on Thurs-Fri nights, hired by the venue for extra security.
3. All signs and whatever was required as part of the security plan were in place.

For anyone who thinks extra security would have helped at the Clubhouse, event security will not, because they CAN NOT, do anything in the instance of guns being pulled. They aren't police. They have SOME training in how to deal with confrontations and in self-defense, other than that, gun gets pulled or shots get fired, get the fu(k outta the way and call the cops is the security plan. Its ludicrous to think that security guards could have stopped this. Gang task forces can't stop gang bangers from shooting each other on the regular.

I wasn't at the meeting nor has it been made clear what the reasoning is behind the closure. What I do know is if the Clubhouse had been warned "1 more time of you not complying with security laws and we'll shut ya down" then I dig why people are bringing up the divider for all ages shows, and other alleged issues IF those issues, new ones like a proven lack of adequate security, etc. exist. Otherwise, the issue at hand is ONLY what happened in the parking lot. And if ANYONE thinks that you can stop drinking in the parking lot of ANYWHERE, they are in lala land. Yes, when I worked for the aforementioned company, part of what we did was meander around parking lots to try and stem this type of thing, but it still happened. You can't have enough security to make it not happen. Just not realistic. And how the hell is a venue supposed to be able to stop stupid people from being stupid? Gang bangers will be gang bangers.

The one thing I will say is Eugenia should have known better than to host a rap show. Sad to say it but it is fact that more often than not extreme violence occurs at rap shows. (Thought not exclusively, as exemplified by my Club Rio adventure.) I've known her since back in the day when she was a bartender at Mustang Sally's (which used to be a live music venue, and is not the topless bar which I think I just read now exists under the same name.)

As for the Newtimes reporting of this story; oh how I miss the days of David Holthouse. His no BS reporting, and INVESTIGATIVE reporting, coupled with his love for live music of all kinds, was a breath of fresh air.

Wow! Suprise! A concert venue hosts "gangsta rappers"; and a shootout ensues. Well color me shocked! I've been to The Clubhouse several times, most recently to see KMFDM and there has never been a shooting. But "gangsta" fans "mob" the venue and it gets closed. Way to go minority gangsta fans! Way to screw it up for everyone!

Don't blame the police or the venue. Blame the show-goers. They're the reason why they're closing the venue down. Not the police. Not the venue. But the stupid, immature pieces of shit that go to these shows with guns and knifes. This isn't some third-world country where we have to carry a weapon to protect ourselves. This is America. Come on people!! Grow the fuck up!

You know, I've watched venues come and go since the
'80's. The Metro, Rocker's, etc. Every time one shuts down, it sucks for not
only the local scene but the national, as well. Eventually, smaller bands will
have no place to play, which means, no local shows, no national acts with small
fan bases. Anyone remember the 'exclusive' about how you could buy drugs in the
Metro's restrooms? I believe it was about '86 or '87. That horrible story from
Channel 10 got the Metro shut down quicker than you can say 'shit', even
though, you can go into practically any bar or club and do the exact same
thing, but because the Metro catered to 'punks', it was a target. That was back
when being a punk a 'bad' thing and not for hipsters.

hold on a minute and don't be so cocksure about the okay job that's been done on this story, guest. 15 or so youths and young adults were riddled with bullets and we've been provided how much information on their condition? that's right, the new times as well as  their liberal, progressive and very caring readers and blog commenters have been silent on this part of the story. nobody seems to care about the innocent concert goers who were just out for some lighthearted fun when, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, caps were being popped into their asses. I think it's a tremendous shame that an asshole like me is the only one who cares. fuck all y'all heartless bastards.

The shooters were black and they were shooting at other black people does this mean they are racist to? blacks hate their own skin color and they hate being black and hate other blacks. its a well known secret and a fact in the black community we just dont talk about it to non blacks. we keep things like that to our own kind.

I agree and would give the venue a chance if there wasn't a fatal shooting there 5 years ago and a stabbing 3 years ago.  they have been investigated before and told what security measures they needed to take and they didn't.

I agree most dont see the impact this really has and its an attack on music, free speech and small biz owners not to mention descrimination and we can't leave out strong arming small biz owners into paying for police protection(organized crime). AZ has been doing this for decades Stand up AZ grow some balls.

Why yes, I do. Reason being, while I was not the person within the company who had to make sure each venue we worked at adhered to their specific security plans, there were people within our company who did that exact thing. People with years and years of experience in this. One of whom is a former police officer. Another who went on to be head of security at the largest venue in metro-Phoenix because of her background. And the company's owner (who may or may not still be the owner) took his business and adherence to policy and procedure very seriously.

And all that aside, my bad for not remembering, if I had known to begin with, what the security plan for 1 venue out of the 100's we had worked at, 10+ years ago, was. If you have another comment to add you might want to think before you hit "post as" so as to ensure you don't appear ignorant twice in the same conversation. ;-) Have a nice day.

I have seen many caucasian acts perform at this venue and there was not a single case of violence, not even durring a free KMFDM show. But when they open the doors to minority "gangsta" acts violence ensues and the venue gets closed.  I've seen this again and again.
