My103.9 Now On the Air

When the news broke that X103.9 would be "shifting formats from alternative rock to a "by Gen-X, for Gen-X playlist," the natural question was, "Will any of the X103.9 DJs be staying on in the transition?"

My103.9 launched today, and the site's website, My Phoenix Radio, has an answer, in the MyInfo section:

Who will we hear on the station?

For a while, outside of Dave Pratt Live in the mornings, the only voices you will hear are YOURS. My 103.9 will be sharing stories, your memories, your conections... So the true voice of My 103.9 is you.

So, Pratt, and you.

In a press release, The Riveria Broadcasting, which owns Power 98.3 (KKFR-FM), Latino Vibe 95.1 (KVIB-FM), and My103.9 (KEXX-FM) states:

Phoenix, AZ., January 9, 2012 - Riviera Broadcasting proudly announces the new hit radio station My103.9, launching in the Phoenix market on Thursday, January 12th. A first of its kind, My103.9 will be a station created primarily through listener input, and will be uniquely designed to connect with the Gen X audience...

Focusing on the music Gen X loves and wants to hear, My103.9 will be more than just a radio station: it will be an engaging and inclusive community where much of the on-air music and content will be designed through the feedback, requests, and desires of the Phoenix listening audience. Keeping up with their varied and savvy communication styles, My103.9 will invite listeners to stay in constant touch through call-in's, text messaging, and by participating in the station's active social network and online community...

While audience feedback will direct a large portion of the musical content, core artists heard on My103.9 will include U2, The Police, Blondie, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Eagles, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Pretenders, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, and many others.

Read the entire thing at Dave Pratt Live.

Meanwhile, over the X103.9 Facebook (no telling how long that's going to stay up), fans have been pretty vocal in their distaste for the format change. Some have even started an online campaign to ask Valley punk band Authority Zero to headline Save X103.9 Fest and Vision Productions Fest (via traditional methods of campaigning, of course: "...comment, wall post, e-mail, stalk, or send smoke signals to Authority Zero"), on Saturday, April 21. The event is not featured on the Nile's show calendar.

So there you are. I guess, theoretically, if everyone in the Valley really, really wanted to hear what X103.9 played, you could jam the "Submit My Playlist" box with requests for songs from the old format.

I mean, seriously, where do you have to go to listen to some Offspring in this town?

I dont know how many times I have to post in several different places, I am truly disappointed in the format change. 103.9 was the only station that i actually liked in the phx radio market, as did all of my friends. TG i have sirus. I like mr p. always have, but as a 40 something lady, I'm soooo over classic rock, have been for at least 20 years or more. Love alt always have, let's get current mr p shall we? Just becuz u like that old c rock Crap and that's your demo, doesn't mean we need to be subjected to another crappy c rock station. Come on phx we deserve better stations like in sd or la for f sake. I have lived in this sweltering dust bowl since the 70s, which means I've endured the crap stations in phx for a long while. Get a clue please! Thx

I'm sad that I had to change my station from 103.9 but I could not listen to any moe 80's mix. The Edge was fantastic very sorry to hear it go.

I've hated Dave Pratt since he was morning host on the old 97.9 and was horrified when he popped back up on the 103.9 morning show like the-DBag-That-Refused-To-Die.

I hoped, beyond hope, that he would not have an impact on the formatting (which had already taken a hit after they got rid of the Morning Ritual) but when I heard him playing Fleetwood Mac on his show, making jokes about "these kids these days," and asking who the hell this "modest yahoo" guy was that they were playing, I knew 103.9 was doomed. Edgefest, That Damn Show, Local Frequency and tireless promotion of the local alternative scene - all integral parts of what was great about The Edge.  Now we have yet another station that will play "With or Without You" every freakin' day, and insult us by throwing corporate playlists at us that have nothing to do with what made Gen X Gen X.  No Pixies?  No Deftones?  No Clash?  No new alternative or even a speck of indie to be seen anywhere in this desert. . . .I'm with the others who are or have already made the jump to free internet radio.

I'd be all over 106.7 if I could get a good signal out in the sticks.

Exactly how is Jane's Addiction, Green Day, Offspring, and Coldplay considered 'alternative music'? Seriously? How? The fact that people are crying about 103.9 chaning just shows how truly pathetic their music tastes where/are/always will be.

Dave Pratt is just an immature bastard all about control.  He lives in the 80's and is nothing but delusional for thinking that this sort of music actually tailors to Gen X.  This must be his way of carrying out a personal vendetta against the true Generation X and getting back at everyone after being kicked off so many stations, all while criticizing rock radio.  Unless action is taken now, 103.9 will be run into the ground.  We (all previous listeners) need to contact the company who owns the station, Riveira Broadcasting (contact info can be found under "my contact" on the website) and Marc Young (the programming director) and flood them with calls about the programming change.

You can come to KWSS 106.7fm. Not only do we play alternative rock on the locally hosted shows my show iterviews the bands, interviews the fans and I do the shows right from the venue. I do not pretend to be the smoothest host, in fact I am still fairly horrible at it, but at least the bands get their music played, the listeners get to hear the personalities of the bands and their spoken voice and the fans can go right to the venues to hear these guys gig. So, where can you go, KWSS has been here long enough to be confident in what we do and the bands all know us. On what station can a bands call up a DJ on his cell phone and get on his show for a 15-20 minutes segment of talk and 4 tracks of music. I think we excell in that.

First a thanks to New Times blog, if not for your coverage of this Dave Pratt would have kept this thing under-wraps.

Not to be a troll but this 'new' station wont work for me. Wont listen and its already off my preset.
There are already waay too many Variety and Classic Rock stations in the Valley, too many better formats to listen to 'Social Media' Pick & Play lists... 'Choose ur playlist'? Really?? Cheap gimmick vs a truly cutting edge station that pushed the envelope for new and local rock....Coming from SoCal this is especially hard to stomach, Alt/X/Edge Rock available on any number of Stations at any time.

Alt/X/Edge Rock should never die and hope the Powers that be feel the pinch of this new format and lost listeners, ad revenues, etc. You had the Alt Rock Format all to your selves in the Valley and now you've left a huge void to jump into an already oversaturated (Variety / Classic Rock) format. LOL
Hope someone eventually brings Alt Rock BACK 2 the Valley free 'Terrestrial radio' airwaves.   In meantime, I will give 106.7 a try hopefully they fill the void. This is very lame decision, advance notice, Marketing campaign, not much in the way of a Fair well to one of the old great Alt Rock stations in the Southwest.... Lame all over... FAIL on the whole 9 yards...

What's a radio? Is this really an issue?

WHY?! There needs to be a 90s alternative station! Stupid radio. Hate it. It should disappear forever.

That press release is the biggest steaming pile of marketing department HORSESHIT I have ever read in my life.

Tried to listen to this station on my way home this evening...lasted about 15 minutes before they played that absolutely hideous "What's Going On" song and I was done...and I'm never going back. Ever. I can hear the same shitty songs played to death on Mix, The Peak, KEZ, KDKB, KSLX, etc....and I'm done with them too.

Judging by the posts on their Facebook pages (new & old) I'm not the only one who is permanently removing this station from my presets. The Facebook hate is palpable and apparently they are starting to remove the most negative posts, especially on Pratt's page. Hopefully the tidal wave of criticism continues until the empty corporate suits that made this format change see the error of their ways...or lose their jobs. This needs to go down as an epic corporate failure on the order of New Coke and Netflix. (And not that I want to encourage illegal behavior but a little station website hacking might be in order as well...)

Corporate radio really just needs to die.

Stopped listening during the morning drive once they brought on Pratt.   Now doesn't sound like there is a reason to listen at all..   There were times when they were very good (both format & DJ's), it's too bad they couldn't maintain it..

They did this once before. They even had a pledge like we won't talk over the music, and we will tell you the artist and song name, etc.  That didn't last long.  I stopped listening when they dumped Chuck and Vince.

My heart is very sad at the loss of the the station formerly known as the Edge. Many hours of listening to that station. The bands. The shows! The Edge always put on great shows: That Damn Show and Edgefest. THOSE are MY memories. Not this crap.

I have Sirius and I had cut way back on the hours of listening to X1039 when Dave Pratt was added. I'm still sad at the loss of this station and it's talented and underrated on-air staff. You could tell Robin, Craven and Gadger were passionate about music. Unfortunately the station started sucking when they went away from "the independent radio" format.

So don't fret PHX, you can technically still hear Sublime & Red Hot Chili Peppers 4 times an hour.
