Alice Cooper, Balam Acab, Savant, and More in This Week's Issue

Alice Cooper is a lot of things: Shock rock pioneer, radio personality, golfer, restauranteur, and advocate for at risk youth.

This weekend's 11th annual Welcome 2 My Christmas Pudding event is yet another instance of Alice Cooper atoning for his dark, dark past (you know, like the chicken thing, those questionable NSFW photos, and that time he made Anthony Bourdain ingest "The Big Unit"). The Alice Cooper of the stage has always been an act, but Lauren Wise brings us a little peek into what the real Alice Cooper is like -- and he seems like a pretty nice guy.

M.T. Richards brings us the story of Alec Koone, who records as Balam Acab, and is quietly (while living with his mom) recalling "Teddy Riley, D'Angelo, and R. Kelly, creative songwriters who parented an edgier, sexier style of R&B a generation ago."

Meanwhile, we have the story of Tucson's Savant, an MC who tries to steer away from the typical rap crowd. "A lot of rappers nowadays grew up listening to more urban music," he says. "I didn't. I was the son of a minister. I wasn't exposed to hip-hop until I was 15, and even then, it was in small doses...so a lot of my musical sensibilities come from that: gospel, classical, jazz, my music composition classes, theory, training. Hip-hop is kind of tossed on top of it."

We've also got shorter previews about Cold Shott and the Hurricane Horns, 1967, Man-Cat, Pusha-T, Low Culture, and Genesis P-Orridge.
