Gwar guitarist Cory Smoot was found dead Thursday morning, according to NME.

The band found Smoot, also known to metal fans as Flattus Maxiumus, while they were preparing to cross the border to Canada. The cause of his death is currently unknown.

Frontman Dave Brockie, also known as Oderus Urungus, has released a short statement about the passing of Smoot. A full statement will be released in the coming days.

"At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today," Brockie said in the statement. "We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. ...Please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him."

The band has not yet made any decisions in regards to whether or not they will cancel part or all of the remainder of their North American tour, which means those who were looking forward to seeing Gwar perform on Monday, November 14 at the Marquee Theatre will have to hang tight until the band figures out its plans. We will bring news about the status of the show when we receive it.
