Phoenix's DJ M2 competes in the Red Bull Thre3style national finals last night in Las Vegas.
It was a case of "close but no cigar" for DJ M2 last night in Sin City. Despite putting on an impressive display of spinning and scratching on the decks, the Phoenix turntablist king came up a bit short during the Red Bull Thre3style U.S. finals on Thursday evening at Rain Nightclub in Las Vegas.

The Power 98.3 selecta finished second overall in what a Red Bull spoke losing out to first place winner Big Once from Chicago. M2, who won Arizona's Thre3style regionals at the Venue Scottsdale back in April, faced off against 10 other regional winners from throughout the nation during the competition, including Dallas' Fishr Pryce, San Francisco's Goldenchyld, and SoCal spinster Dynamix.

Each DJ got 15 minutes to work their magic on the mixers using tracks from at least three different genres. And according to a Red Bull spokesperson, the competition was "very close" between M2 and Big Once.

Phoenix DJs have now taken second place at the competition for the second year in a row, as J.R. Phillips (a.k.a. D-JR) was the runner-up during the Thre3style nationals in 2010 in Denver.

But even if M2 came in second place in the eyes of the judges, he's still first in the hearts of his fans and fellow DJs. According to a tweet by Valley house music maestro Sean Badger, who was in attendance at the event, M2 "crushed the best programmed and technical set I've seen in a battle ever."

Even members of opposition's posse gave the Valley selecta his due, as DJ Trentino (a friend of Big Once) tweeted the following: "DJ M2 was dope, some technical juggles and scratches, good ideas."

While Big Once earned the honor of representing the United States during the next month's Thre3style international finals in Vancouver, Canada (as well as a swank custom trophy shaped like a vinyl record), M2 won't return to the Valley empty-handed. According to Red Bull, he won $1,000 and a gig tonight at the trendy Moon Nightclub in Vegas.

Here's a look back at M2's set from the local Thre3style regionals from April:
