After four weeks of competitive gigging, the dust has settled on X103.9's Fall Frenzy Showdown. What started back in August culminated in last night's seven-way battle for a slot on this year's main stage featuring Blink 182, Matt & Kim and Jimmy Eat World.

Local bands, Saving Shea, Halocene, Howard Til Midnight, We Were Strangers, Fayuca, Poz & Infekt, and Valley Love duked it out at the Marquee Theater. The show started at 7 p.m. and wrapped up at midnight. Each band had 30 minutes to rally the support of their faithful fans and sway the judges votes.

Fayuca ended up closing the finale with a badass ska/reggae rendition of Mexican Rock en Espanol classic, "La Negra Tomasa," and as soon as their set was over, Howard Til Midnight fans rushed back into the theater chanting "H-T-M, H-T-M," which incited Fayuca fans to respond in kind. The crowd kept this up while the decision was announced.

Within 10 minutes the verdict was rendered and much to the surprise of the remaining concertgoers, Halocene emerged victorious. A few scattered cheers rang out but were quickly drowned out by a chorus of boos. Some guys hurled plastic cups of booze at the stage and chanted bullshit as security wrangled everyone out.

Whether or not the judges got it right is debatable, but at the of the day Halocene has a date with a couple of pretty big names.

Fall Frenzy goes down Friday, September 30 at Tempe Beach Park.

if this wasn't a biased article i don't know what is. clearly anthony sandaval (author of this articlee) was there only for the last portion of the show or is close to fayuca. what's debatable is this horribly written article. this is supposed to be about the winner of the contest, and documents htm and fayuca only. new times should can this clown and get someone who actually shows up for the whole event to write about it. poorly written and documented. there were much more interesting things on stage and off (from multiple bands) before htm or fayuca even took stage.  the entire night had tons of surprises. biggest one being that the new times article posting an article about the winner of the contest, yet writing nothing about their performance.

This competition was purely based on ticket sales. it said so in the disclaimer when signing up for the contest. This competition was NOT a talent competition but purely a money maker for the promoters of course. The winners where determined on the amount of tickets sold...

Well, as a musician I can only comment on the the only band that has any talent and I was there and yes Halocene destroyed everyone else...Sorry that the other "bands" (dj's or something) had half naked girls on stage..Doesn't get it done when you have no talent..good luck at your new jobs at McDonalds...Halocene is the real deal!

Halocene rocks.  I like Raf, but Halocene was better live, and had way more energy in their performance than any of the other bands not to mention they brought far more people.

it should be noted that the winner was announced at 12AM, halocene played at 8:30 so duh there were only stoners left

Hey Guitarastar, We were Strangers had just as good Musicians and A Better Singer than Halocene. Halocene looked cheap with thier Cardboard messages and they didnt destroy anyone. W W S had better songs also.

It should also be noted that the owner of the Marquee has big ties to Halocene.....not impressed with either!  I think the decision was already made....

marquee had nothing to do with who won. they had outside judges. And if marquee, one of the most popular venues in az has ties to halocene that must mean they have some sort of talent. AND if the decision was already made then they must truly be that badass.

you fucking moron
