The Mars Volta Perform Three New Songs from New "Future Punk" Album

Categories: News

After a two-year break, The Mars Volta has wrapped up their sixth studio album, the follow-up to 2009's Octahedron. Yet-to-be-titled, the album is slated for release in 2012. But don't worry, we wouldn't leave you hanging out there without a little taste.

Songs from the album recently hit You Tube, featuring the band in Europe. And apparently, singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala isn't opting for mystery, either. more than Mars Volta tunes usually do, anyway.

It looks like the El Paso-based band -- known for their 30-minute songs, organ grinds, Spanish influences, and Zeppelinesque rants -- is shying away from their standards with this. According to front-man Cedric Bixler-Zavala's YouTube channel, the upcoming album is "future punk. That's the only way to describe it."

Take a listen:

"I'm Not Running Away," formerly "Aegis"

"Trinkets Pale the Moon"

"Walk the Plank," formerly "Molochwalk"

God, it's taking forever for them to come out with something new.  Octahedron had some pretty good songs on it, but I can see why Zavala said he didn't like it that much, or that it disappointed him,.., or whatever he said about it.  Mars Volta is one of the most innovative bands around, and I can't wait for this album.  Hope it's good.

sorry "Trinkets Pale of Moon"

It's "Trinket Pale of Moon" FYI.
