120 Minutes, the MTV show that broke countless alternative bands from 1986 to 2000, is coming back, this time on MTV2 -- and it will be hosted by the show's original veejay, music geek extraordinaire Matt Pinfield.

Pinfield has been one of the most influential and enthusiastic figures in alternative music since he first became a radio DJ at Jersey shore station WHTG-FM 106.3 in 1984. He began hosting 120 Minutes in 1995, and audiences and musicians alike were impressed with his extensive music knowledge. MTV even parlayed Pinfield's knowledge into a game show called Stump Matt on Total Request Live.

After 120 Minutes went off-air in 2000, Pinfield went on to become Vice President of A&R and artist development for Columbia Records, where he signed bands including Crossfade, and Coheed and Cambria. Since May 28, 2008, Pinfield's been a morning DJ on New York radio station WXRP 101.9 FM. He'll return to 120 Minutes with the launch show on Saturday, July 30, at 10 p.m. PST.

Check out the big-name guests booked for the show after the jump, along with clips of some of our favorite past 120 Minutes artist interviews.

The debut episode of MTV2's 120 Minutes with Matt Pinfield will feature exclusive interviews with PJ Harvey, Kings of Leon, Lupe Fiasco, Dave Grohl, Black Angels, Das Racist, and Dangermouse with Danielle Luppi, among others. The show will also feature the uncensored version of the video for "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam.

"I am ecstatic to [be] part of the rebirth of this iconic and influential music series," Pinfield said. "While the new show on MTV2 will feature the same dose of progressive music fans of the original 120 Minutes embraced and loved, we'll now be expanding outside the alternative music universe to feature a myriad of emerging artists and sounds from a variety of genres."

The video clip below features Pinfield interviewing the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in 1998. Pinfield says he was glad the band came back because they didn't answer any of his questions the year before.
