Calexico and Mariachi Luz de Luna Rep the Southwest on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Jimmy Kimmel may lag behind CoCo and Jimmy Fallon as the funniest guy in late night television, but he kicked everyone's ass with his musical guest last night. Rocking a strong Cinco de Mayo vibe, he featured Tucson-based act Calexico, joined by Mariachi Luz de Luna.

Performing "Crystal Frontier" from Calexico's 2001 EP Even My Sure Things Fall Through, the band achieved a truly remarkable feat: sounding decent on a late night show.
The music of Calexico is often moody and somber, but the take on the song last night was more of the "get-the-party-started" variety. The studio audience seemed to take the message to heart.

Crystal Frontier is from a 2001 EP of previously unreleased tracks "Even My Sure Things Fall Through". It's been a concert staple for the last 10 years. "Carried to Dust" is great, but this song ain't on it. It's also the song Gabby Giffords played for her husband to wake the space shuttle several years ago.

Thank you for the spot, c-fan. You are right, of course, and I appreciate the correction.
