Railroad Revival Tour Abandons Chandler for Tempe (Why? 100,000 Possible Reasons)

Mumford & Sons would not like you to get your next haircut off of a scalper when they can sell you one.
Chandler's Arizona Railway Museum is apparently not equipped to handle the Railroad Revival Tour that will bring Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show to town this month.

So the show has been moved to Tempe instead, according to Hayley Ringle of The Arizona Republic.

The show had been scheduled for April 23 at the museum in Tumbleweed Park (cross streets: Germann and McQueen) but will instead take place in Tempe, on 5th Street between Ash and Farmer.

The tour's founder, Dave Conway, told the Republic that the the tour was moved because of what the paper calls "permit problems with the railroad track in Chandler, which is owned by the museum, as well as capacity and coordination issues."

"We were trying to make a lot of things happen in a place where nobody had done anything like that before," Conway told the paper. "There were just things that were complicated."

That's probably true -- in part. The venue's limitations didn't seem to be a problem to start with, though, however the show's 8,000 tickets have been sold out for weeks. Now, as if by magic, there will be room for 2,000 more people. Tickets for the New Orleans date are selling for $55, which is also what Chandler tickets sold for. If organizers do the same here they'll net an extra $100,000 or so.

Obviously, rather than leave a bunch of cash on the table it made sense to move the show someplace with more room so more tickets could be sold. After all, every extra ticket is cash straight into the promoter's pocket. And, really, who cares about the fans who bought tickets for a smaller show at a cute old museum? Just put 'em in a field next to a random set of rusty tracks and let 'em have fun!

Except the museum, "will still be a part of the local stop," Conway insists. Details of how are sketchy at the moment.

"Promoting them (the Chandler museum) is still very important, even with the move," Conway told the paper. "Trains and the history of the railroad and history of rail travel are the reason for this whole experience."

Well, that and making money.

"There are so many people out there who want to go," Conway said. "We don't want people to go to ticket resellers."

Sure, especially when you can print more and sell them yourself.

ya know what... then don't sell this to me as some cool, unique concert experience and taking my money as such before having all of your ducks in a row, jackass. is this someone's first foray into concert promotion or some shit because this displays piss poor planning. and then to ship it off to a hot asphalt parking lot in the desert and pack 2,000 more people onto that stovetop surface next to me? that should be fun.. more people to stand behind in line to get in, to get a drink, to use the can.. thanks for nothing. the vibe and location were half of what led me to shell out $55 in the first place. i wouldn't pay $20 to see this show at the marquee. but even then the marquee would have a/c. highly irritated.

The Chandler location would have been awesome but these guys are amazing and I would pay to see them anywhere... I live on Germain and Alma School which is less than amile from the orginal event location, even if it were true that they moved the event to get more cash, so what! these guys have been playing in pubs and broke down bars for years before this... They deserve some cash and I have no problem given them mine...

It's quite possible the bands are getting the exact same amount of money either way. The promoter pays the acts what's called a "guarantee" and they play whenever and wherever the contract says. This one may have said that park or just somewhere along the tracks in Arizona. Maybe they made more because of the switch, but maybe not!

Despite everyone's efforts, staying in Chandler was not an option. the show was not moved to increase capacity.

what you have to keep in mind, is that we aren't just moving an event.. we're also moving a 1400' long train. there are very few options in every city that allow for a train to stop on tracks next to a space that can handle an event this size. having our train be a part of the experience is very important to this entire tour.

If it wasn't about selling more tickets (aka--$$$) and I truly hope it wasnt, then can someone explain why 2,000 more tickets were sold please?

Thank You.

can you guys possibly do some reporting and actually talk to a source? your quotes are verbatim from the azcentral article. how about reaching out to the railroad museum and get their side, if its different? or, maybe you did, but it just didn't serve your agenda.

took me 2 seconds to find this... straight from the museum itself. doubt you'll even post a recantation.

Wait... you wanted me to link to a statement from the museum simply saying the show has been moved?

Was that information not clear from the other information? This is a blog, dude, it's not exhaustively reported expose -- just quick and dirty information.

I think it's pretty clear this is based off an Arizona Republic report, with me adding the information about how much extra cash they'll make by moving the show to a parking lot.

and the link i provided stated...

"Moved due to not meeting requirements of City of Chandler."

i don't presume to tell you what to write, thats why we have a constitution. just saying you may want to check it out a little before making assumptions on the intentions of the persons/artists involved. the information isn't the problem, its the opinion conveyed that i felt inaccurate. shit happens, chandler wouldn't allow it. permitting for special events can be a total pain in the ass. fact remains, its still going to be an awesome show regardless what intersection or venue they decide to park this train at.

This is complete bullshit. I would have never bought tickets if this was the original location.
