Pavle Milic, What Are You Listening To?
When you put your key in the ignition and turn on the radio, what station would play right now? If my wife drove, it's highly likely that NPR will be on. I really don't listen to radio much. I do download All Songs Considered.
What's the last song played on your portal music player? "One Last" by Avi Buffalo, self-titlled debut album relesed by Sup Pop Records. The whole album is just an indie pop gem.
What's the first record you bought? Bob Marley & The Wailers, the Exodus album.
What's the first concert you saw? The B-52s' performance at The Arizona State Fair, circa early '90s.
What's your favorite concert you've ever been to? This is a really hard question to answer. I remember going to see Ben Kweller with my wife at The Fillmore in San Francisco, and we got a chance to meet him briefly while he was trying to get Dorian--his oldest son now--to fall asleep before the show. I really enjoyed that concert, and what made it extra special was being at the Fillmore, a place with such amazing history. My wife introduced me to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I had to go by myself once because she couldn't get her shifts covered. It was probably one of the coolest experiences. I saw The Magic Numbers, Depeche Mode, Matisyahu, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen, Animal Collective. The best performance for me was by My Morning Jacket.
Preferred format: CD, vinyl, cassette, 8-Track or digital? Digital for ease of use. Records are awesome now and again, though.
What's your favorite CD? Oh wow...that's the hardest question ever. I will name the top five albums I'm listening to now for no reason other than that's what I'm in the mood for: number one--Sufjan Stevens' The Age of Adz; number two--Local Natives' Gorilla Manor; number three--Andrew Bird's Noble Beast; number four--Radiohead's The Bends; and number five--The Dears' No Cities Left.
Who is your favorite singer or band? Again, it is just too hard to pick a favorite. It depends on the time of day, my mood or whatever else is going on. These are some artists that have stood the test of time, and I still listen to on a regular basis (in no particular order): Wilco, Spoon, Radiohead, Belle and Sebastian, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, Built to Spill, and My Morning Jacket. When I'm in the mood for Latin music I listen to Silvio Rodriguez, Mercedes Sosa, Joaquin Sabina, Los Caifanes and Joe Arroyo.
Does you computer track how many times you've played something--if so, what's at the top of the list? "I Summon You" by Spoon on the album Gimmie Fiction. 291 plays.
What was your favorite new or new-to-you album from 2010? Coconut Records' Nighttiming, from 2007.
What one song would you play if you had a world-wide radio audience? Mercedes Sosa's "Gracias a La Vida". She's an Argentinian songbird also known as "voice of the voiceless ones".
What is your favorite music video? I am totally gonna date myself on this one. A-ha's "Take On Me," from 1985.
