My Chemical Romance Issues Statement About Re-Boycott: They're Offically Back On The Sound Strike

Categories: News
MyChemicalRomance_statement.jpg

Wishy-washy Sound Strikers My Chemical Romance have posted a short and sweet statement about their re-boycott of Arizona.

We want to apologize to all our fans for the cancellation of our Phoenix show on May 24, 2011. This show should have never been booked due to our affiliation with Zach de la Rocha's The Sound Strike Organization. This was a horrible scheduling oversight on our part and for this we are deeply sorry.

For more information and how to help please visit www.thesoundstrike.net.

That about says it all, doesn't it? Since de la Rocha says he won't call off the Arizona boycott until the federal government makes sweeping changes to immigration policy, and since MCR's brand of emo-pop-punk is on its last legs, I feel pretty confident predicting the band never plays here again.

Sorry to all you Arizona-dwelling My Chemical Romance fans!

Then again, maybe it's time to grow up and like a band with a singer who doesn't wear guyliner.

Just an idea.

wow ok dickweed. Telling the MCR fans to grow up isn't cool man, especially since we have since the first album and the Black Parade days. Gerard Way doesn't wear guyliner any more and the whole band actually can't stand the term emo. So, next time you want to write a biased article that you know is going to piss a large group of people off, you might want to do some research. Thanks :)

as a hardcore guy, i wrote this band off years ago for their whiny bullshit, but was shocked at how great the entire BLACK PARADE lp was. it defies all of my usual tastes, and i absolutely love it. however, listening to the pre-release of the new lp last night combined with this news (and the general whiny, woe-is-me stereotypical teenage bullshit that makes up the large percentage of their fanbase. seriously guys, sack up. life is rough. blah.) have pretty much eliminated any respect i had for them. i will now consider the good record a fluke, and move on back to the rest of my record collection.

The fact that this band -- which hasn't been relevant since that Black Parade album four years ago -- doesn't even have the foresight to remind the person that books their shows to skip AZ shows just what a hollow sham The Sound Strike truly is.

My Chemical Romance simply submitted their name to some stupid list, thinking they were taking a stand by doing so, but then they go and erroneously book a show in Arizona and, thus, have to grovelingly cancel said show. Pathetic.

Didn't they just hire a new drummer? The one from The Bled, a Tucson band? Yeah, they did.

(hey martin maybe you could be a little less petty and knock off the annoying personal attacks; this would be a better blog if you got over your little trolling shtick)

Wow, I can't figure out what's worse about this article: Cizmar's immature band-bashing, or the whole asinine boycott.

I'll start with the boycott: it's a joke that doesn nothing to further any cause other than having bad feelings towards the bands that petulantly and ignorantly decide that they'll send a message by ignoring their fans. It stupid because almost none of the people that voted for Brewer or Pearce or Horne give two shits about MCR or Zach de le Rosa, or any of the bands that attach their name to this boycott. These holier-than-thou bands are preaching to the choir, and steering clear of our state is going to have no impact on the 50+ year-old right-wingers that drive the political winds of our state. Why punish the kids and music fans that love these bands?

As for Cizmar and his typical juvenile writing: MCR is actually a great band. I'm not some emo kid; I'm in my 40s and have been fanatical about a wide range of music since I was about 10 years old. I think MCR is so far ahead of their contemporaries in terms of overall creativity and talent that it's not even funny, and The Black Parade was without a doubt my favorite album of 2006, and possibly of the decade. Listen to a track like "Mama" and tell me that any other peer band of MCR's could pull that off. And from what I've heard of the new one, they're stretching their sound out even more. So Marty, quite stereotyping and step up your writing so you sound more like a grown-up.

Have you not been following MCR as of late? Maybe you should do your research. MCR has said they are totally over the whole "guyliner" thing, and Danger Days is going to have a completely different feel to it. Also, if you look at what the band members have said in the past, they all agree that the term and genre "emo" are trash. These aren't just a bunch of teenagers. They're actual musicians. Maybe it's time to grow up and become a real writer who does their freaking homework.

I read this blog because it came up in my Google alert. I take no issue with those with have differing opinions for the sake of those opinions. But if I were to write a blog, I would write something that I would be proud of, something that if stumbled upon by a new reader, would encourage them to visit my blog again. Unfortunately the author does not see it this way.

Another commenter said it earlier; the last two sentences are just wrong. This story is certainly worth reporting, but one's personal opinion in how an artist dresses and looks on stage is irrelevant to the topic at hand. Not only that, but it makes the author look homophobic, therefore stripping him of any credibility in the eyes of the reader. Way to make yourself look ignorant!

Now that the state of Arizona has actually elected Jan Brewer as their (our) governor (and mainly based on a platform built around SB1070), I think that the Sound Strike is more valid than ever.

Every critic of the Sound Strike said that it would be more beneficial for bands to tour through Phoenix and try to educate the public about the issues at hand, but I seriously doubt that could have resulted in a 14% swing in the gubernatorial election results. We made (or re-made, or re-affirmed the making of, or voted for the re-making of) our bed, and should lie in it.

Arizonans have retroactively given SB1070 their stamp of approval, the Sound Strike and other anti-1070 actions should continue until the law is neutered permanently by the voters / legislators of Arizona or by the Federal Government.

Actually, if the Federal Government has to step in to force our state to run itself sanely, I think the Sound Strike should continue indefinitely.

Nonetheless, thanks for keeping the issue in the press, even if it's by way of willful antagonism.

Oh. Usually I agree with your thoughts but your whole last sentence is just wrong. As a fan, I take offense to being told to "grow up" & to "like a singer who doesn't wear guyliner." Nice.

I actually think that if the Soundstrike bands came here and performed and really encouraged the youth to get out and vote, that a 14% swing just might have been possible. The youth vote only accounted for 9% of the votes, down from 18% in 2008. Now take into account the possibility that they might have actually influenced people that were going to vote for Brewer, or not vote for a Governor at all, and I think it may have been possible. Not likely, but a much better chance of making a difference than their boycott.

Is this the start of a fanfic you're writing?

Is it going to be one of the porno ones where you write up a sex scene involving Way and that dude that knocked up Jessica Simpson's sister or just generally creepy and full of ray guns?

Michael Lopez

Yes. No one gave a shit about that band after the buzz following the lead single from that album subsided. Sometimes a band tours or releases some EPs in between albums, showing their fans that they are doing something with their four years. That wasn't really the case with MCR. Besides, that Black Parade album and its corresponding goth marching band aesthetic doesn't work nowadays. It did for a little bit back in 2006.

Martin,You are an idiot and your brand of journalism is ridiculous. You were so pompous and arrogant in your last article about My Chemical Romance, I hope now you understand that this boycott is bigger and more meaningful than your shitty column. And please do some fact checking next, smart people actually read the Phoenix New Times you moron.

Phoenix New Times

Whoa there buddy.... What factual inaccuracy do you wish to correct?

Sure, this issue is bigger. Zack says it's about changing the ENTIRE federal immigration policy and he won't back down until Obama and congress act, regardless of the fact that SB 1070, like a *very similar* law passed by California voters, isn't in effect... But I'm a music writer and I write about bands and shows. Or, in this case, bands who are not playing shows even though they booked them.

Phoenix New Times
Phoenix New Times

I hate to break this to you, but you JUST WROTE a mini fanfic above.... in this very short story you have a raygun and ask the singer of your favorite band if it's OK to blast a music critic's face with it and he says yes and you shoot the critic... That's a fanfic.

And it was indeed weird.
