Kanye's New Album Cover Banned in U.S. (NSFW)

Kanye West is back to doing what he does best: shocking the world. According to Pitchfork, Kanye isn't pleased about his racy album cover being banned in the U.S. though.

The album artwork, which is the work of artist George Condo, features a nude pair, one with a drink in hand and the other an armless winged creature that has a polka dot tail, the latter mounting the former.

Island Def Jam is urging West to reconsider the cover for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy so the album can be sold at retailers like Best Buy and Walmart. However, Def Jam is standing by their artist, allowing Kanye to keep the cover if he so chooses.

While the artwork is an appropriate (or should I say inappropriate) visual match to the name of his upcoming album, West may have to risk less impressive sales if he decides to stick to Condo's illustration.

Um wow. So a painting that would end up as maybe a 2 or 3 inch square on a CD cover has upset stores that couldn't care less about music or art. Try a sticker that says "Kanye's New Album" or something. Where's the story? How completely conservative this country has become? How sad is the music industry that Best Buy and Walmart are your outlets?

A number of case like this in the past. The European Cover of Pink Floyd's "A Nice Pair" is different than the US version, with the US version having round stickers over certain parts!

Banned by whom? The record label? The U.S. Government? By Kanye's management hoping to stir up controversy and thus boost album sales?

Personally, I would love to have the "True" cover to the CD instead of the Walmart version. Mr. West should conciser having the actual covers be sold online for his fans to pickup, like a DIY Collector's set.

That's a decent suggestion. While I don't disagree with Def Jam that an alternate cover might be appropriate for copies that are sold in stores, I don't see why he shouldn't keep his original racy artwork for online downloads.
