Phoenix's biggest theater has a new name.

Live Nation, the concert promoter who owns the building at 400 West Washington Street formerly known as Dodge Theatre, issued a press release today saying we are henceforth to refer to the 5,000 seat venue as Comerica Theatre.

In keeping with longstanding Phoenix tradition "Theatre" will be spelled with an "RE" instead of an "ER."

Comerica is a Dallas-based bank. Their most famous name-deal to date is for the Detroit Tigers' gorgeous baseball stadium. It's a five-year naming agreement beginning with Jerry Seinfeld's show this Saturday. Seinfeld, area trivia buffs may know, was the first comedian to ever play ye olde Dodge Theatre was back in 2002.

"We are thrilled to lend the 'Comerica' name to this impressive theatre and are especially pleased to support a venue that features world class performances from Live Nation," said Comerica's Meredith Russell. "From theatrical productions to concerts, this theatre clearly enriches the cultural landscape of Phoenix."

For Seinfeld, they should call it "Kramerica".

I hate the new name. What is the point of changing it? The old name sounded like the 'Old west', which was fitting. The new name sounds, well, corporate; which is fitting as well, seeing the dark road the Republican rule is sure to keep taking us down. How about Nomerica? Or Con-erica. Hey at least some grand entertainment is still showing up at this fine place. See you in December BRIAN REGAN!!!

That is not at "Phoenix tradition." The "re" is the classic and correct spelling of the word. The "er" is a modern Americanization of the word. Even most famous American Theatres use the "re" because they are actually older than the change in spelling.

If there is a standard now, which there is not, it is that a "theatre" is for live performance and a "theater" is for movies. But many movie theatres will use the re to sound more dignified, and many new performance spaces will use the er to try and not confuse people.

How does it feel to get schooled on a spelling issue by ME?? I have no right telling anyone about the correct spelling of anything :)

PS I thought this room had no soul before.
