Tokio Hotel: Are the Fans More Crazy Than the Band Is Lame? Or Vice-Versa?

What the fuck?
Perhaps it's not that evident for a casual observer, but this week is painfully slow for new music releases. It is my job to select one album that comes out every Tuesday and find some reviews of said album to post on Up On The Sun for my Review Roundup. Some weeks it's difficult to choose just one album to feature, other weeks it's difficult to find just one album. This week being the latter, I had to settle on Teflon Don, the fourth album from Miami rapper Rick Ross. It's a great album, but I had to rely on Amazon.com's bestseller list to find it, and that is something I don't necessarily relish doing.

I usually shy away from using Amazon's list because it features albums from well-known artists -- ones signed to major record labels. I'd rather dedicate a blog post to a smaller, lesser-known band, one that could use more publicity and word-of-mouth. You can call me indie if you'd like, I don't give a shit -- that's just how I see my Tuesday Review Roundup post.

Well, somehow -- in highlighting what a slow week for new releases it was in my post about Rick Ross -- I managed to offend Tokio Hotel fans with one sentence. This begs the question: "what the fuck, guys?"

First things first, let's look at what was said in the original post from this Tuesday:

That's not to say that anything good is being released today, but when Kidz Bop 18 and Tokio Hotel round out the top three for Amazon's new releases, it hardly constitutes a solid day for new music.

That one sentence is the only mention of Tokio Hotel in the entire post. I didn't tag the post with "Tokio Hotel" nor did I embed the band's name in any photos used.

All this Tokio Hotel hatred I apparently spewed in my original post drew the ire of multiple commenters wondering why I was trashing their favorite band. Responses such as "Not too happy with this article. While Tokio Hotel is not as popular in America as it is Europe, they still are one of the best music artists to have ever graced music" and "Dude, what's with the negative tone towards Tokio Hotel's album release? They have won a mountain of international awards worldwide, that's not lame in the slightest."

You're right, Tokio Hotel's international acclaim isn't lame. The fact that the third biggest album on Amazon for this week is a live album -- a live album with zero new material -- from a German pop group lead by an androgynous, Pete Burns worshipping young man that doesn't quite have the same amount of fame in the US as they do elsewhere is, in fact, lame.

The fact that a live album from Tokio Hotel is the number three bestselling album for this week proves that it is a slow week for new releases. That was my original intent in my Rick Ross post, and that is the absolute truth. Hell, Humanoid City Live was beat out by Kidz Bop 18 on Amazon's list and that is unbelievably sad -- sad because it blatantly highlights just how slow this week was. Yet my one sentence dedicated to Tokio Hotel pissed off more that one person and for that I am mystified, not to mention annoyed.

Are Tokio Hotel fans just really thin-skinned? If one sentence dedicated to the band in a post about an entirely different musician is pissing people off, then I can't imagine what happens when the band's albums or concerts evoke less than favorable reviews. There must be an inherent air of touchiness with Tokio Hotel fans because they all know how ridiculous Bill Kaulitz looks. These fans have to live their lives being prepared with constant rebuttals anytime they have to mention the fact that Tokio Hotel is one of their favorite bands.

I imagine conversations go something like this:
Kid A: "I like Tokio Hotel."
Kid B: "Tokio Hotel? You mean that weird German band with that goofy, effete dude with the anime hair?"
Kid A: "Yeah, but you just don't understand Bill's art. His hair is an extension of his personality."
Kid B: "What about his vagina?"

It's okay to be a fan of Tokio Hotel. Their music has the same appeal I assume Kesha's music does -- it's full of mindless lyrics and super catchy choruses, both of which are overridden by the singer's ridiculous aesthetic. But for the select few of you that misunderstood how I interpreted this week to be a slow one for new music as me taking pot-shots at German pop music I say tough shit

It really was a slow week for new music. And you know what? Tokio Hotel sucks, too.

Get educated please and think before you speak your mouth is like your anal spore shooting out shit they love their fans translate music work twice as hard and will always be the best and in case you didn't know the music is fantastic and I bet you couldn't write or play like they do.you have zero music skills so do the world a favor shut up and get a new job since you couldn't identify good music if it would save your life.

i unlike many of you opinionated people am actually a Tokio Hotel fan. i don't give a SHit that you don't appreciate their music or think they suck titties. because i don't go around dissing bring me to the horizon, bless the fall, andy sixx or the music of that such. you know why? because i unlike others actually don't give one flying f*ck that your sense in music is different from mine. so please stop saying such awful things about the band. but don't worry it's not like me to actually give a damn about what your reply to my comment is. i just wanted you too know that you may think that teasing Tokio Hotel is fun because they are different to all the other bands but thats whats so good about them. they aren't the same. and neither am i. are you going to bitch at me for being different? well give it your all you selfish lil' fuckers :)

It took so many of you four minutes to read this?? It really makes me wonder what you do in your spare time... As someone who is completely neutral towards this band, I found this article and the ensuing turmoil quite amusing. You do realize that this was most likely written with the intent to create chaos among all the self-righteous fangirls? And to those of you who complained about what a waste of time this article was: Why, then, did you bother to post a comment, wasting even more of your precious time? It's sweet how you rise so magnificently to the occasion when your dear idols have been insulted, but you don't need to write scathing comments on an article that was clearly written to garner such comments. Instead, find something useful to do with your lives!

Oh, another TH hater! <3

I would just like to congratulate you on how many fangirls you just pissed off/offended, and how you just had your true writing skills put into perspective for a lot of people; majority opinion now states you are a crap writer with zero point and all trash.

My friends and I always joke about the members of Tokio Hotel, and what they do behind closed doors. Yes, Bill is effeminate, and yes he is 'goofy,' he is a ridiculously egotistical Diva (but in a rather endearing way, I might add), and his style is, shall we say, 'out of this world.' So? Where I come from this is called 'being you' and not 'joining the bandwagon' or 'being a fake to fit in/gain recognition.' We love to contemplate the younger Kaulitz's true gender, orientation, and inclination, assume that he is in a hidden relationship with his older brother, and consider the likes of Georg and Gustav. However, the four of them are male, Tom is a womanizer and they're all human. Bill says he is straight, and all of these things are the image they want to present; they are face value, and we must accept them as such.

...But comparing them to Ke$ha, really? That's a little much. While yes, they both have hypnotically catchy tunes and rhythms, there is something to be said of a difference between the two: TH writes their own lyrics and music based off of experiences and epiphanies; Ke$ha is handed hers and ordered to perform in a studio. All four members are actual musicians who practice, and learn, and perform, and make mistakes. Bill is a real singer who brings his personality to the stage; Ke$ha is an image who lip-syncs and dances to pre-arranged noise which more likely than not has nothing to even do with her. Oh wait--but that would make those boys an actual band, and her the new Britney Spears!

Side note: I have to agree with Lisa on "Pretty lame arguments, it's clear you're trying to piss the fangirls off on purpose, especially by mentioning Bill's 'vagina' and comparing TH to Kesha. It's true that their English lyrics are not as strong as the German lyrics, but in no way you can compare it to something like 'tick tock on the clock'. I bet the negativity is from the fact that you're attracted to Bill, since you mainly diss his dandy appearance and you even went as far as thinking about his genitals and wishing it was a vagina. It's okay though, this is the typical reaction from a guy when he learns that Bill is indeed a boy and has a dick." particularly on her lyrics comment. These guys are German, so it just goes to stand that their German lyrics would make a little more sense than the English ones they have to create in order to fit the pre-written music--music, which, btw, was written specifically for the German lyrics. You have to give them SOME credit for that.

I would just like to point out this one thing: is anyone else seeing The Beatles parallel here? A band from Europe, scorned at first for dorky hair-cuts and silly outfits, surrounded by mostly screaming girls from tween to middle age, no real acclaim, but still oddly popular in America... and a steady rise to fame. They both stood up for what they believed in. But if you noticed, The Beatles became popular enough; in fact they've been brought back, strangely enough, and have become the new image of Apple. (Insert my own "what the fuck, guys?" here--but don't mistake; love them to death, just don't understand the new found popularity. Either the hippie age is coming back, or a bunch of girls are jumping on the bandwagon again.)

I can't disagree with you about the rabid fans--but I can disagree with the term you used. You see, every band has its own breed of 'fangirl,' a word coined long ago for the screaming, violent, sporadic animal known to stalk bands and jump out of dark shadowy places at them. While I can't claim to have been to any of their concerts, I have watched their live performance DVD's, and... yeesh. There seems to be no end to those animals! And to every "Not all of us are like that!" commentators on this blog... no one can hear you over the blood-curdling shrieks. ;)

Love your post though; it made for a good laugh!--LS

Oh, and P.S. Tokio Hotel is my favorite band. :o

WTF, you are the most ubsurd, unprofesssional rude, idotic, contrasting, and confused crackpot I have ever seen. I bet you stupid little blog got a lot of reads and publicity f=from this stupid cheap shot at actually really good music. Tokio Hotel is groundbreaking and amazing, this is nothing "ridiculous" about the music, the band, or the lead singer, who by the way idolized by millions around the world, no to mention their countless awards. AND TOKIO HOTEL WON THE VMAS FOR BEST NEW ARTIST. They beat out Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Adele, and Katy Perry. So yes, they do have many fans in America. btw, u suck for being so dumb.

Talentiert, nein?

dude the usa isnt the only country that counts...TH is well known all over europe, latinamerica, asia and even australia and new zealand. get your head outta your butt and realise the world is not comprised of just AMERICA.also to bring the fans into this was probably the most stupid thing you as a writer could do...yes some fans are crazy and BUT do not generalise because most fans are in their late teens, ealry 20's and even older.and then to judge the band on their APPEARANCE? now come on really don't we listen to a band because of their music not because of what they look like (how superficial of you)and the low blow "vagina" comment now that was just plain offensive and rude. well yes i think we've all come to the conclusion that you should find a new day job because obviously this isnt working out for you if you get "annoyed" when a handful of people say negative things about a previous entry...grow up please and take a good long look in the mirror doesn't it seem like you're the one who is "thin skinned....

wow to say that TH has mindless lyrics with catchy choruses cleary shows that you have not listened to their music which makes your rant/argument invalid and to judge a band by what their front man looks like than their actual music is even worse...you should find another career path or hobby or whatever you think this is because you really don't know how to do it properly

ok well i'd like to comment that and i hope you'll read my comment.first of all I AM A TH-FAN.look,you are not the only one who dislikes tokio hotel. in fact,i know more haters than fans ok?and that's excactly the reason that the fans of TH are so out of control.and you are totally right about that.WE ARE OUT OF CONTROL.but there's a reason we crossed the line.the fact that we can't express out love to this band without being cursed, made fun of,even mobbed etc. it's not our fault at the first place that we got so crazy.but it is our fault that we refuse to admit and try to fix it.but if you have a problem with us,just talk shit about us and leave the band alone.they do their best.they are getting better and better year by year.they were kinds when they started making music and they're growing up through that.you can not blame them for the music they write.that's what they do,you like it?cool.you don't?yet cool!if you don't like their music or their looks just keep it to yourself.cause right now,you are taking advantage of the fact that you work at a company or sth and you have many readers, that's what you're doing.if any of us write a text like yours on our homepages no one would really care cause "who are they to listen to?" well this is how it goes with you too.oh and fyi,the convensation would most likely go like this:Kid A:"What kind of music do you like?"Kid B:"Tokio Hotel,Aerosmith,Amy Winehouse,Kings of Leon and more"Kid A:"Gay"Kid B:"What exactly is your problem?"Kid A:"Gay!Gay!Gay!Gay!"Kid B:"How can music be gay?"Kid A:"Gay!Gay!Gay!Gay!Gay!Gay!Gay!"Kid B:"Oh screw you! What do you listen to anyway?"Kid A:"Miley Cyrous"...I think you get the message.

FYI loser,Bill kaulitz is a guy. Or were you just to blind to see that?Tokio Hotel fans stand up for the band and protect it WITH THERE LIFE unlike anyone else does with there favorite band.Tokio Hotels music is not in the slightest bit like Ke$ha's for SO many reasons. The most important being Tokio Hotel actually MEANS what they say in they're lyrics unlike Ke$ha. YOU MUST BE DEAF OLD MAN.And I don't f---ing CARE if you like them or not!!!What's the point of you writing this and trashing them? They never did anything to you. Regardless if you like their music or not, why did you write this? Since it is obvious you like the Jonas brothers as well as barney, I will use them as an example; I would never write anything bad about them. You MUST have issues if you ment that. I mean, that's just LOW. Even for you.I don't care if you hate them just don't flipping write trash about them seeing as you are outnumbered. Tokio hotel has millions of Fans. You have 2. You, and your mom.Okay, I'll let you go know so you don't miss barney and friends.Have fun listening you the Jonas brothers, hannah montanna, and Barney!
