Good lord, when is it going to rain around here? I'm getting antsy for a cloudy, rainy day. I spent the first 35 years of my life in the Midwest, where it rains plenty during the summer. This is my sixth summer here, and I'm still not fully acclimated. It's not even the heat that's killing me. It's all the sun.

Without a cloudy, crappy day now and then, it's impossible to fully enjoy a dreamy, twee pop band like Secret Cities. This isn't music you listen to on a hot and blazingly sunny day. You just don't. Today is reserved for music forged in hell.

Here's a song from Pink Graffiti. Am I right? It's not even suitable for nighttime listening around here until maybe late September.

Deja Vu: Late-era Yo La Tengo, if two-thirds of YLT took a bunch of sleeping pills and switched instruments with each other.
I'd rather listen to: Dead Weather, as ornery as a Phoenix summer.

"Nothing Not New" is a yearlong project in which New Times editorial operations manager Jay Bennett, a 41-year-old music fan and musician, will listen only to music released in 2010. Each Monday through Friday, he will listen to one new record (no best ofs, reissues, or concert recordings) and write about it. Why? Because in the words of his editor, Martin Cizmar, he suffers from "aesthetic atrophy," a wasting away of one's ability to embrace new and different music as one ages.
