Thoughts on Dave Brookhouser's List of "Non-Suck" Local Bands?

• <p>I think there are a few bands that should have been on this list that aren't. </p> <p>Cousins of the Wize<br /> Fayuca<br /> The Dead Eyes of London<br /> Drunken Immortals<br /> Wiley One</p> <p>just to name a few....</p>

• <p>Honestly Ash, outside of Andrew Jackson Jihad, Small Leaks Sink Ships (which off the top of my head I can't remember what they sounded like) and Jimmy Eat World I can't say I've heard of the other bands you've listed. I'll certainly try to check 'em out this weekend. So thanks for that ... </p> <p>And music (just like any art) is always subjective, and yeah they are my opinions nothing else. That said I've been around music for 28 years(both professionally [worked in college and commercial radio] and personally) and I do try to appreciate good bands who's genre I don't particularly like. For example I am not a huge fan of "gypsy" music but respect what the Dry River Yacht Club do.</p> <p>Then there are some genres that just don't speak to me re: Hip Hop, metal and jam bands. Again just a matter of taste ... </p>

I really did appreciate your list but I thought perhaps you omitted these bands accidentally but if you insist that is not the case then I guess I just disagree. I liked your list of requirements. </p>

• <p>First off thanks to Martin for the post ... </p> <p>So here are the 3 requirements to even be considered for my "best of" list ... </p> <p>1) you must have played out at a credible club in the past two years. Each week I listen to EVERY band that is playing out, and if the band doesn't play out they are dead to me.</p> <p>2) if the band HAS played out in the past two years and they didn't make the list ... yep I kinda think that band band sucks ... and perhaps suck ass.</p> <p>3) if an local band treats their hometown as if it were on the moon they are not even considered. A perfect example is the Meat Puppets. As for Jimmy Eat World, outside of a couple of impromptu shows at Modified, to the best of my knowledge they haven't played Phoenix in a while. And to be perfectly honest, the last few albums have not stricken me as something all that special.</p> <p>4) have some decently recorded music on their web site and/or MySpace page. More than a few bands foolishly post stuff that is clearly recorded in their parents basement. To those bands, come on, it's 2010, get with the program and learn ProTools.</p>

• <p>Definitely have to second the motion in regards to the Chandails and French Quarter.</p> <p>I'd add The Cullens, Sungsang, The Pods, and Landmine Marathon to that list. Are Mondegreen still together? If so, I'd throw them on there too.</p>

• <p>While it's nice to see my own band on their (twice?), a lot of my absolute favorites aren't: French Quarter, Chandails, Earthmen & Strangers, Becky Lee & Drunkfoot, Automatic Erasers, D-Factor, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Porches, Whisperlights, Michelle Blades. </p> <p>I'd gladly have Soft Drink taken off the list (at least the once) to have those bands added. </p>

• <p>Not only does everyone in J.E.W. still like here, Jacqui, they still consider themselves a local band." Look for my story about how they beat Joey Arroyo Band for the Republic's Reader's Choice award... Their drummer said explicitly they are a "local band."</p>

• <p>Good catch on AJJ, Anony, can't believe I missed them... Possibly the best band in Phoenix!</p>

• <p>Ash, you're right about Roger Clyne, although it seems like he'll play a bunch for a while, then go quiet. </p> <p>The whole point of the list (and all of CenPhoTV for that matter) is to really promote Phoenix and get it hopping. I didn't know that most of Jimmy still lived here, but that's good enough to add them to the list in my book. </p> <p>Everyone please keep listing bands that you love here! I know a lot goes under our radar, and the bigger that list is, the better.</p>

I was wondering if that list was only including bands that stay pretty local but i thought there were already bands on there like Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers that are constantly on tour and dont do as many shows in the valley so that is why i felt like including J.E.W. and Michelle Branch. I mean I know that most if not all members of Jimmy Eat World live here and they do random shows here and there in between tours so they should definitely be included. Michelle Branch, I am not sure if she lives here anymore. And Martin, I back your choice of Anarbor over The Maine although they do have quite the following it doesn't necessarily mean they are an amazing band. I just felt like in their own genre they are pretty good. I guess we could also then add bands like Authority Zero or Eyes Set to Kill who are killing it in their genre but aren't exactly my cup of tea. </p>

• <p>Keep in mind, by the way, that the list is designed to highlight bands that are HERE and playing HERE regularly. That's why Jimmy Eat World, Michelle Branch, Meat Puppets, etc., are not on it.</p>
