Cris Kirkwood Produces Rockabilly Band Voodoo Swing's New Record

Cris Kirkwood in the studio with Voodoo Swing.
Voodoo Swing, an old-timey Phoenix rockabilly band, got a little help from Meat Puppet Cris Kirkwood on their record, Voodoo Beans. Some of the new tracks are already up on the band's MySpace page.

The record, set for release early next month, is very traditional roots music, and marks the start of what Kirkwood hopes will be a new direction in his career. The Puppets' most recent album, Sewn Together, came out a year ago.

"I really dug Voodoo Swing's great on-stage charisma as well as their powerful musicianship," Kirkwood said in a press release. "Record production is a new phase for me and I felt there would be no better place to start than with a great roots music combo like Voodoo Swing."

"I wanted something I could be proud of. You just know good music when you hear it."

Like Kirkwood, Voodoo Swing are no spring chickens. The band released its first record in 1993 on the British record label Nervous Records, playing with other '90s revivalists like The Reverend
Horton Heat and The Dave and Deke Combo. Phoenix's rockabilly scene, you may have read, is pretty strong.

This has really taken a turn for the sad and pathetic! Ruth, I don't know you personally, but you seem like someone who might want to seek some serious psychological remedies for what is clearly a sad case of the pathetics. Attacking a local rockabilly band? Really? Dragging a religion into the conversation is even more sad. I don't know if the guys in Voodoo Swing or Mormon or not, and I don't really care. It seems to me you're bringing up religion the same way others use race or gender to try and subtly discriminate, while claiming to be "sounding the alarm!" What is the problem here? Why wasn't this "alarm" sounded over a year ago when this article was published? Why haven't others sounded this "alarm" against Voodoo Swing if they're so evil? You seem to be an army of one with a serious axe to grind. Either that or just another mean spirited, pathetic human being who get their kicks from talking crap about others. Either way, give this clear holy war of yours a rest. This whole thing smacks of sour grapes to me! As someone above mentioned, why not show the world what you're capable of instead of bashing the work of others? Tearing something down is easy, it's building something that's hard.

I wrote this to begin exposing Voodoo Swing's bad behavior.  Just one week ago, they tried to have a video of me singing on YouTube removed.  It's not a Voodoo Swing song that I am singing and it is the highest played Voodoo Swing video by QUITE far with over 2,500 hits. Why can't Voodoo Swing just move on?

Sceptic

Wouldn't Voodoo Swing be moving on by wanting YouTube to have videos reflecting their CURRENT lineup? Wouldn't it be Ruth that wants to live in the past by keeping up videos of a band she hasn't been in for a year? Seems Ruth ought to move on and post some video of her current music. Unless of course, she hasn't done anything new and current.

When the Suns traded Amare to New York, they went and reshot all their promo materials without his image in them. Any organization, band, NBA team, grocery store, wants to promote who they are NOW, not who they WERE last year.

Ruth should show the world what she is capable of musically. Put out a record, play a show at a club that isn't 5 minutes from her house, Tour. Make Videos. Fly away little birdie, it's time to leave the comfort of the Voodoo Swing nest; the Flathead nest. DO SOMETHING NEW! Triple-dog-dare ya!

Not long after we started Savoy Hop Cats a wise man told Elizabeth and I, "If you don't have haters you aren't doing something right". Just consider all the BS talking about you a compliment guys, keep doing what you do and never let up. I love your music and I am proud to call you my friends! There may be more to your latest CD release title than meets the eye... Keep On Rollin'! ;-)

RUDE RUDE RUTH! Seriously this is totally uncalled for, and I stand behind the nicest most sincere gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Voodoo Swing are truly talented musicians and taking a stab at their religion is just spineless and classless. I am truly disappointed in your antics, just move on and stop making your self look more pathetic. Shorty & Leeroy are great friends, amazing musicians, and two of the nicest most devoted people I have EVER MET! Keep on Rolling Voodoo Swing you are loved!

You THINK they are good friends but you don't know what I have heard them say behind your backs!  Since VS cannot seem to move on and was up to their sneaky antics again LAST WEEK on YouTube, I posted this and I'm sick of it.  I hadn't even seen their article in the NT when I posted this.  We have NO mutual friends so their were no posts in my stream and I didn't grab a NT this week.  I saw it when I went online to contact the NT's music editor, Niki D' Andrea regarding the matter.

Also I point out that they are Mormon because they act quite holier than thou but lie, cheat and steal.  I stand corrected, JACK MORMONS.

We are very proud to say we have become good friends with Voodoo Swing. We met them four years ago at one of their gigs. I'm not sure who "Juddwmorgan" actually saw, as this band is the most down to earth, genuine and honest we've met at any show.  They are one of the few bands who absolutely respect everyone out there trying to make something of their music regardless of genre. We will always trust and believe in them.   And they do take criticism very well from their fans, as we know personally.  They've always been very respectful for their fans thoughts.

I don't know exactly what happened between Ruth, Shorty and Leeroy but I don't think the guys deserve such a campaign against them.  I believe anyone who listens to this garbage should consider the source.

By the way awesome CD!*with great success comes great envy*

The article says a press release was submitted, of which parts were used for the article. The article was written by Mr. Cizmar, like it says at the top.

Some questions:

Did Chris NOT like the band's on-stage charisma, or musicianship? Was record production NOT a new phase for him? Would he have rather started with a DIFFERENT band? Did Cris NOT want to produce something he could be proud of? Does he NOT know good music when he hears it?

Ruth took the picture of the boys in the studio, and supplied it for the article. I don't see anyone holding a gun to Cris' head. Cris and Ruth are adults and nobody can force them to play in, or produce the records of any rockabilly band; especially if they are lousy at what they do!

I have had the extreme pleasure of going on the road with Voodoo Swing as their merch and road hand. These guys are more than humble and enjoy meeting and talking to every fan. I can't say enough great things about Voodoo Swing and am proud to call them my friends.Ruth needs to stop taking cheap shots at Voodoo Swing and let them go on with their career, which is far from "beyond desperate".

Ruth Wilson

They took a cheap shot at me last week when they tried to get the highest played video that is of me singing a song that is not a VS song, removed from youtube.  That is what I am angry about.   They are just bullying me as always.  I'm not going to just do nothing about their dishonest and unethical antics and allow it all to go unexposed.  People should know how sneaky and dishonest these holy rollers really are.

J.R.

Ruth, Quit taking pop shots at this band. You're no longer associated with the band and we all know its mutual. Making your own personal vendetta last this long is both sad and embarrassing not only for yourself but the entire Phoenix Music Scene. People leave bands all the time and it may come to your surprise but no one really cares either way. Its about people making music out of the love of it. Stop over estimating your own self importance in the music scene, living off your self perceived reputation as anyone "special" If you've got something to offer, then just shut up and make music, aint no one stopping you.

Seriously? An article printed over a year ago, and now you're protesting it? Ruth, you seem to have a habit of not lasting very long with bands, so maybe you should try looking in the mirror to see where the problem is!

Olivier Zahm
Olivier Zahm

I, Olivier Zahm, was the engineer of that record. In my own studio. I have now recorded 4 albums with Voodoo Swing. Greasers Por Vida, the record mentioned in this article, Refried Voodoo Beans, and Keep On Rollin'.

I had a great time with Mr. Kirkwood, the band and him shared great chemistry. Nothing quoted is out of context. The animosity spewed by people not in the band at that time is only defamation through hearsay. Get the facts !

And someone's beliefs ought to be respected, I don't think New Times is a forum for such derogatory comments from its readers. It's a Rockabilly album, not a schism, take it from the atheist.

Voodoo Swing is a band that I now have signed to my label, not just because they are fantastic musicians, but also because they have earned the respect of their peers through hard work and commitment. They always came through when tough times were on the horizon, and delivered. And are still humble, never seen an ego trip from the founding members.

If someone has beef with them, why not. However, cyber-bullying should be observed closely, and treated as such. And shall.

This article was written over a year ago, interestingly enough, the recent nasty posts appear just as their new record is mentioned in another recent NT article.

If facts show me that Voodoo Swing is at fault, so be it. Where are the facts ?As for what happened on my own property, I'd love to have someone debate otherwise.

Best regards to all, let's grow up, move on, and make cool records.

Sincerely,

Olivier ZahmElectric Lotus LabelElectric Lotus Music

I've tried to stay above the fray, and answer the utter nonsense that has been thrown my way with silence. All I would ask anybody is to question the timing of these accusations: Voodoo Swing just had a very favorable write up in the New Times. Voodoo Swing just put out a new CD that is doing extremely well. Voodoo Swing is about to embark on a two month, 42 show tour of Europe. This article is over a year old. Why post this supposed outrage now? The answer to that question is pretty simple if you think about it. It's just rockabilly folks!

Keep it greasy!Shorty

This press release was written entirely and submitted to the New Times by Leeroy Aidukaitis, Voodoo Swing's drummer on behalf of Voodoo Swing.  Every single quote that is represented as being stated by Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets was written by Leeroy without Cris' or my knowledge or consent.  In short, Voodoo Swing has told another big fat lie.

I was Voodoo Swing's upright bass player and played on every track of this CD and sang on roughly half.  Cris is my boyfriend and he produced this CD against my better judgment.  Voodoo Swing asked me what I thought about Cris producing the CD and I didn't want him to get involved.  I was already feeling used enough by these guys and didn't want them to take their desperation to an astonishing even higher level.  In the 12 years that Cris and I have been together, it has never even occurred to me to ask him to further my career in any way.  I have witnessed the unbelievable arrogance and audacity of Voodoo Swing on many occasions and I wish I could say that this one takes the cake, but this is pretty small potatoes compared to some of the other whoppers they have told.  "Like Kirkwood, Voodoo Swing..." does not compare in any way and to imply that they are somehow equal or 'like' is so ridiculous!

This is really an insult because the Kirkwood brothers are known for giving incredible interviews.  They are not coming from the same beyond desperate place as Voodoo Swing These quotes sound like they came straight from the Mormon missionary who wrote them, put quotation marks around his ego stroking remarks, lied by claiming that Cris Kirkwood said these things and sent it off to the New Times to be in the very music column that is named after the Meat Puppets' record, Up On The Sun.

The New Times should really correct this by removing it entirely but not before exposing the truth and exposing Voodoo Swing's shameless lie.  We are flattered that Cris is now trustworthy enough that nobody bothered to check their source though.  :)  In all seriousness, the right thing to do here would be to expose it for the pathetic lie that it is.  It's only fair that the New Times just let people know that it was Voodoo Swing who made up a bunch of shameless quotes about themselves and then claimed that Cris Kirkwood said it.  That would make it right. That is all that we ask with regard to this matter.

The bottom line is this:  Shorty and Leeroy are lifelong friends who play music together to have fun and entertain.  They take time away from their families to tour and make almost no money doing this.  They do it for the love of the music and their fans.  Things didn't work out between you and that's too bad, but it happens. They are NICE guys and don't deserve or warrant a smear campaign being waged against them.  Any attempt they are making to distance themselves from you is an attempt to distance themselves from the drama associated with you. You are talented in your own right and should focus your time and energy on that and not on bringing up events that transpired a year ago.

I met VooDoo Swing while on filming on tour with another band back in March and quickly connected with these guys. They love rockabilly, love making music and entertaining people. So now I'm working with them heading to Europe to film their latest tour. These guys are a class act and just want to make music. It's unfortunate that one person can't let go and accept responsibility for her own decisions and move on with life.So far everyone I've worked with in the rockabilly music scene has been great and a blast to be around. as you may guess, I've never met Ruth and only know of her by things like this.

And seriously, Isn't Chris a big boy and able to speak for himself if he has a problem all of a sudden with a year-old article? Does Chris have to have you sign off on everything too? Or is he strapped to the bed like a scene out of Misery?

Say good night Ruth.

These guys think their SHXX doesn't stink. They talk alot of stuff about other bands. It's cool that they are a good band but they need a bit of humbling.
