Howard Stern Gives $5,000 To Phoenix Band The Heartless For Singing Into Sidekick's Penis

Satellite radio personality Howard Stern had a little fun with Phoenix pop-punkers The Heartless earlier this week.

Lead singer Abe Schmidt and guitarist Jeff Tretta played the song "Just to Be" on Stern's show to win a $5,000 prize. It wasn't quite that simple, of course. Stern attached a microphone to the penis of one of his standard associates, Sal, and called the whole thing "Cockaoke." I'm happy to say our boys handled the penis like pros.

Video of the whole sordid incident below. Oh, and here's the song, sans penis. It's not a bad little ditty at all. The band has a show Tuesday night at Scottsdale's Chyro Arts with Ultra Violent Lights (former meber of Fenix Tx).

The bit was hilarious and all the bands sounded really good. Those talking trash about Stern are just haters. He's better than ever. Only a show that good could bring millions of people over to satellite radio which otherwise kinda sucks to be honest.

hmm.. the fact that it was a surprise "hey if you sing into this dick, i'll give you $5k" does make it a little different. i was under the impression that it's what they went out there to do. if they were already going to get the exposure then that's cool. sucks they got called out to a no-win situation. do it and you're that band on stern that sang into a dick.. don't do it and you're that prude band who clearly doesn't want it bad enough. one more reason i can't stand the stern show.
I don't see what the big deal is? Most bands would do pretty much anything for exposure nowadays. If I had known about this contest I probably would have entered too. I heard these guys on stern yesterday and I thought they took it in stride, and the few tunes on their myspace seem pretty good. So why not? Howard sprung this on them at the last minute, how could they have known? Not to mention, I wouldn't want to be the guy to make it to NYC and then pussy out. Just sayin

well it sounds like they got more than $5000 total when it all shakes out so good for them. assuming, of course, that they're cool with what i'm sure the likely fallout will be. not much usually comes of novelty. i liken it to bands who get popular by hitting the radio waves with a novelty song. ie, dynamite hack debuting on the radio with a hip hop cover ("Boyz-n-the-hood"). that was a pretty solid album. but did anyone give a shit? do they now?
Oh... and Howard totally footed the bill for them. Homeboys' flights were covered and they stayed in a pretty classy joint in NYC. They'll most likely buy copious amounts of PBR with that five grand. Oh, and maybe record a new album, but whatevs.

this is the same band who did a commercial for a bank. nothing should suprise you. (im not saying whether its a good or bad thing, that is each persons call. i would probably gladly do a bank commercial for enough $$$.)
Here's the thing about Abe Schmidt: He's my hero. That kid with do ANYTHING to promote his band and it's of no surprise he pulled this one off. Congrats, guys!!
They were last featured by us in like 2006 or something, so they've been around awhile and don't have as much to lose. Got my attention anyway, I'd say they're pretty smart fellas, that song is good enough for me to watch out for their next show and give them some sort of advance coverage.
wow.. i wonder if that even covered the travel expenses. probably moreso than a car wash i guess. i'd like to say good for them if they're willing to trade dignity for exposure (pun) but a stunt such as this will likely just get you relegated to a small footnote referencing the absurdity of self promotion.. and not any kind of real industry attention.
