The Love Me Nots perform at the Yucca Tap Room on New Year's Eve.
So how did your New Year's Eve go last night? While I'm guessing it involved plenty of off-the-chain and alcohol-fueled action, it probably pales in comparison to the crowded and cacophonous celebration put on by P-Town's premier garage/retro rock act The Love Me Nots at the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe.

The band's hour-long set barely even took place on New Year's Eve at all, as Nicole Laurenne and the rest of the band didn't take to the dive bar's smallish stage only 10 minutes before midnight. But what they lacked in punctuality, the Love Me Nots made up for sheer musical power, as they filled the next 90 minutes or so with a huge set consisting of a rollicking selection of songs from their first three albums.

For the next 90 minutes or so, the foursome unleashed a huge set consisting of a rollicking selection of songs from their first couple albums, including a few rarities.

Laurenne was her usual energetic self, banging away at the keys of her white organ and flipping her hair around like a madwoman. The Yucca was more crowded than I've ever seen it before (which made maneuvering around to get a drink and a smoke something of a challenge) and the audience of alt-music lovers and the usual gothy/rockabilly types were really getting into the set. Heck, I even saw a few altercockers in attendance who were rocking out.

Although I didn't arrive at the bar in time to catch opening acts Labor Party and Scorpion vs. Tarantula (which includes two of my New Times compatriots), I heard that both bands were quite potent as well.

It was a great show and an even greater way to kick off the New Year.

Critic's Notebook:

Last Night: The Love Me Nots at Yucca Tap Room.

Better Than: Rubbing elbows with drunks and douchebags at the Insight Fiesta Bowl Block Party.

Random Fact: Laurenne told a humorous story in between songs about how she once threw a martini olive into the crowd at a previous show and a fan caught it in their mouth.

Further Listening: Their latest album, Upsidedown Insideout.

One More Thing: The Love Me Nots will be holding a video release show on January 22 in Scottsdale.
