New Long Wong's Music Venue: What Does It Mean?

• <p>The new place is trying to establish itself as totally associated with the classic Long Wong's with signs like "WE'RE BACK" and "since 1980." <br /> Well they finally opened their doors and I had some wings. They are NOT WORTHY of the Long Wong's name, much less "famous award-winning wings," and the NT Best Of Phoenix emblem on any advertising needs to be REVOKED, such as in the Collegiate Coupon Book (Spring 2010).<br /> The wings are scrawny, dinky, overcooked and overpriced!!!<br /> Read about my experience on YELP.</p>

• <p>who f-ing cares about the music?! long wongs always had crap music. but, they had the best wings in the valley, hands down. long wongs is and always has been about WINGS! </p>

• <p>Ron Goldstein was, in fact, the original owner of Long Wong's. That fact is not in dispute. However, the location located on Mill Avenue in Tempe was sold by him at the beginning of 1989. The claim that the new Long Wong's will be under the same management that spanned the last fifteen years in disingenuous.</p>

• <p>It reference to Martins comment....</p> <p>What MADE Long Wongs on Mill special had very little to do the people who started it....what made Long Wongs on Mill special had to do with a woman name Sara Cina, and many others whose names escape me...</p> <p>The reason people remember Long Wongs on Mill so fondly has very liitle to do with the wings (though they were amazing)</p>

• <p>let me clarify, as my comments hurt the feelings of someone I deeply respect....</p> <p>Long Wongs was what it was....and to many, MANY people it was VERY cool, it just didn't fall in line with my musical tastes...I loved the management there, and most of the staff....</p> <p>Long Wong's, mainly featured local bands, really good ones, just not quite what I was into, though there are many exceptions to that rule....as such as the punk as fuck Hot Fought Cold, and left of center slightly country Rum Tenor, and many, many others....</p> <p>I did love the place...</p> <p>I went and took pix when they started tearing it down...</p> <p>I thought Mill Avenue sucked then, but now that I see how much worse it's gotten, I guess we had it pretty good...</p> <p>I do miss the "old" Tempe...I wish you all coulda been there...it wasn't half bad.</p>

• <p>why doesn't anyone understand this whole debate? it's so stupid. </p> <p>trunkspace doesnt get those shows modified had because it sucks. there is no way most of those bands will even play there. </p> <p>plus, stop saying how much you miss modified. did you even go that often? did you even go to the last four shows to celebrate? probably not. one of the shows there was like ten people there. stop saying you miss it because even if there was a replacement, you wouldnt go enough to keep it open. why is it so hard to understand that people have to go to shows an pay for them to keep places like modified open? a place with no bar, and no other way of generating income? yeah its disappointing but there really isnt another option, idiot.</p> <p>its a community effort to keep places open and to keep places cool. so yeah, keep complaining about it and doing nothing, because that works. your smart ass comments get us nowhere. </p> <p>if its such a bore, make it not a bore. duh.</p> <p>and the compound grill?? pretty sure you'll see WAY more frat dudes that want to get loaded there then somewhere else. </p> <p>its people like you, jim, that make me sick of this whole thing. </p>

• <p>I completely agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.</p>

• <p>Something needs to come up and take the place of where Modified left off. Seriously, this karaoke bar with middle aged local bands playing in Tempe all the time is grinding my gears. </p> <p>The Trunkspace isn't getting nearly as many of the shows I thought they would with Modified closing.</p> <p>It looks like they are all being booked at The Rhythm Room. Which is disappointing because the divided 21+ and all ages really ruins the vibe.</p> <p>Spring is usually a hot spot for indie touring bands to play around the Phoenix area while on their way to SXSW or Coachella, but as of right now there is virtually nowhere for them to play. </p> <p>I'm not getting any hopes up for the new venues opening in Tempe because I'm pretty sure it will be more of the same. </p> <p>The shows probably aren't going to feel like the supportive nature of Trunkspace or Modified shows. Just frat kids looking to get loaded and local bands that still haven't gotten out of AZ since the early 90's.</p>

LOING WONGS WASN'T THAT COOL!!!!</p> <p>It mainly was very, country tinged bar rock bands....It wasn't anything close to what might be labeled a "hip indie club"........Period....Fuck....I went there for ten years, for the $5 pitchers of beer & the Cali burger (w/ Jalepeno's & a side of medium wing sauce, please...)....but not for the music, which was just a little, i dunno, MOR, for my tastes...a bit on the Bob Seger side for me (which is fine, I like Seger okay, but let's not confuse him with Leonard Cohen). </p> <p>Now, Nita's Hideaway...that's where we went for music...</p> <p>Long Wongs was never the place for cool touring bands, or the so-called Indie Scene that existed back then....that was all Sun Club, Hollywood Alley, Bostons, the Mason Jar, & Nita's Hideaway....</p> <p>Let's not pretend things were cooler than they were just to makes us feel better about how slim the pickings are now..</p>
