Don't worry, they'll survive.
Yes, you read that headline right.

This blog is going to be about an event tomorrow that includes performance art, an art installation, a fish roundup and a canal dry-up.

In case you didn't know, our canals are filled with white armur fish that munch on the aquatic vegetation. These little canal-cleaners have to be herded every year so SRP can dry up the canal for maintenance.

And it's happening tomorrow, Saturday, January 9th at the Waterfront in Scottsdale. So the city decided to make it a big to-do.

Starting at 8 a.m. Transfix will join the fish with a live art performance. You may have seen these guys at SMoCA nights a few months ago. The Transfix group dress in all-white Victorian-era garb and cover their skin with white make-up. They silently roam around crowds, striking poses, standing uncomfortably close to strangers and performing curious activites. I believe I saw them unravel a roll of toilet paper once.

They're actually quite good at what they do. Which is, basically, to make people stop and wonder what the hell they are doing.

Meanwhile, artist Fausto Fernandez will be installing his temporary art piece Flowing Overlapping Gesture. Fernandez designed this 100-foot art object specifically for the canal. The piece will be on display until Febuary, when the water returns to the canal and causes the artwork to float. It will take Fernandez and his crew three days to set it up.

And what about the fish?

Good news! They will be relocated to other canals in the Valley.

The canal/fish/art event begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, January 9th at the Scottsdale Waterfront between Goldwater Boulevard and Scottsdale Road, South of Camelback Road. Check www.scottsdalepublicart.org for more details.
