Phoenix Indie Bowl 2009 in Photos

Sadly this purple bowling shirt did not say "Jesus" on the left breast.
First the bad news: New Times is not your 2009 Indie Bowl champions. I take full responsibility for the failure of our vaunted "All Midwest Transplant Team," as I had by far the team's lowest score of the night in our first game, which I only partially redeemed myself for in the second. I'm confident that, had we advanced to the four-team playoff, we would have carried the day, but, like the 2006 Cleveland Indians, which surely would have won the World Series behind the best pitching staff of the decade (three-man rotation: CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee and Jake Westbrook) we didn't quite make it into the final field, and were thus ineligible to bring home the hardware.

It was a lot of fun, though, as you'll see in these photos. Kudos again to "Psyko" Steve Chilton, who did a great job assembling over 30 teams to raise money for Local First Arizona.

More photos and results on the jump.

3. Super Stereo (band)
4. Ear Candy (charity)

Since the event benefits Local First Arizona it's only appropriate that it takes place in the Valley's only independently owned bowling alley, Sunset Bowl.

Entertainment was provided by several local bands, including this one, Poem, and DJ Shane Kennedy.

That's a lotta indie: 30-plus teams rolled in this year's event, the second in an annual series.
Not everyone came in a vintage bowling shirt, but many people did do their best to get in the spirit, like this woman.
So many shiny balls...
Yucca Tap Room owner Rodney Hu put together a very good team. And, yes, we have entered the cute couples portion of the show.
Matthew Reveles and Ami Johnson. Like I said, we have entered the cute couples portion of the show.
Team Wilson Sister reps for Pabst Blue Ribbon.
The Lucky Strike cafe: Serving up surprisingly fancy dishes, like pizza with goat cheese. This is what indie means, kids. Freedom! If this was another chain bowling alley it'd be nothing but heat 'n' eat pepperoni.
Our man Dfactor of the Waved Rumor blog holdin' it down with the solo cup.
This photo is called "Memphis II" and will be the cover of Jimmy Eat World's next record.
