So you think you can dance (for the Phoenix Suns, that is)?
About 200 women from around the Valley thought so when they showed up at the US Airways Center in Phoenix on Saturday morning to audition for the 2009-2010 Suns Dancers squad. In the end, however, only 16 can make the cut.
As with years past, there was plenty of floor-stompin', booty-poppin' excitement (much to our delight, the warm-up felt more like "Soul Train" than a dance audition), but this year's choreography had a little extra bump in its grind courtesy of former Phoenician Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts.
While Roberts is generally more likely to garner attention for her catfights with PCD lead vocalist Nicole Scherzinger, her recent statement about the group's impending breakup, or her alleged hookup with Leonardo DiCaprio last month, Roberts was nothing short of professional when it came to teaching her choreography to the group of Suns dancer hopefuls.
With moves set to a remix of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (you think YOU'RE sick of this track? Try listening to the same couple of eight counts over and over...), the speedy tempo and need for immediate memorization skills easily separated the dancers from the duncers.
Roberts proved to be quite an impressive dancer herself. Without the heels, makeup or stripper-wear there was nothing to distract from her actual talent. Her natural form and fluid movements easily put awkward-armed Britney to shame. Maybe if Roberts pulls a Tonya Harding on Scherzinger she can finally get the spotlight she deserves. She is, after all, generally regarded as the "least tranny-looking" Pussycat Doll.
As for the future Suns Dancers, this all-day audition was only the beginning. Those who made it past Saturday's preliminaries competed again the following day. The final auditions will be held Saturday, August 22, following a rigorous two-day training camp.
