Geek Beat: Epic Superhero Battle Nearly Foiled By Cops

Categories: Geek Beat

Just when you thought we'd never stoop to dressing up for some geeky-weird costume event, we prove you wrong. This past Saturday evening, dozens of geeks (including yours truly!) in spandex, leather and all manner of scary custom superhero attire converged on Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall for the Improv AZ and AZ Cacophony Society's Epic Superhero Battle 2009. Think flash mob -- only much, much geekier.

The premise: Craft your own superhero costume, complete with non-harmful weaponry such as marshmallow gun or foam sword. Meet at a predetermined place. Have a faux battle. Disperse. The problem? The "heroes" narrowly avoided crisis when our arch-nemesis The Scottsdale Police threatened to shut down our operation. What the eff, David Blaine?

The infamous Dark Elvis is very hairy, er, angry...

More superhero madness and photos after the jump...

After the event was posted on Facebook/Twiiter/every random social media site in America a few weeks ago, locals began assembling their costumes. No licensed characters were allowed -- partly to encourage participants to be imaginative, partly to prevent any legal copyright infringement issues, and partly because we already see hundreds of Wolverines and Spider Men at Halloween. So instead we flexed our geek muscles and made up our own superheroes and villains: Toilet Man, Musical Theatre Girl, Rainbow Fight...it was the stuff of childhood dreams.

Do these guys really look dangerous to you?

Unfortunately, Westcor was not amused. The original plan was to have those dressed as "heroes" meet on one side of the mall and the "villains" meet on the other. Heroes and villains would start trekking through the mall until both sides met in the middle and declared a fight. The mock-battle would then take place across the street (off mall property).

Fashion Square's mall cops, and a stern-looking female officer from the Scottsdale PD, soon showed up to stop our valiant heroes.

It's Musical Theatre Girl vs. Random Evil Drummer Woman!!!

After a private super-secret talk with our fearless leader, the heroes were allowed to process through the mall -- albeit without masks and faster than The Flash. We weathered strange looks, open-mouthed gawks, cell phone photos and snarky comments from snooty Scottsdaliens. But eventually we made it to the Scottsdale Waterfront, where a mock battle commenced.

This zombie dude looked a little like Shaun of the Dead, with a radioactive diaper. Clearly a villain...

As opposed to the virtuous Condom Girl, who came prepared with a prophylactic-shaped sack of goodies.

Would you let your kids play with this guy?

This faceless, genderless, alien-like superhero was popular with little ones. Here, he/she/it shows two kids how to load a marshmallow gun and aim at the enemy. (We're guessing their parents didn't realize the costume was obviously made from some kind of head-to-toe Japanese fetish suit.)

That's me on the left, the gorgeous stick-thin blonde in the cool mask . Yeah, I wish. (Sorry, no pics of me. I was behind the camera, remember?)

In the end, the villains triumphed and we all went for a well-deserved and much needed drink or three or eight at the local bar. Peep more pics of the Epic Superhero Battle in Jonathan McNamara's photo slideshow.

Wouldn't YOU have needed a stiff scotch after this??
