If you've read this week's music feature Sonny Long you may have a grasp on who he is (at least in his own mind). Is he the next thing in Arizona music or just another dreamer? Read on to find out.
While writing this week's cover story, witers Niki D'Andrea and Mike Meyer met with Long at the Kiwanis Park Recreation Center in Tempe to ask him a few questions about his upcoming jam and his attempt at NBA stardom. We'd like to present you with a few video clips from that interview to help flesh out this larger than life character.
Check out the video interview and eight or so lines of an "exclusive" song Mr. Long may or may not be working on after the jump.

I just read the article and watched the video about Sonny Long. The Newtimes better hope he forgives you guys for trying to ruin his career!! His new single is very hot!

Who gives a shit about the local hip-hop scene in AZ. I mean really. Is there anyone really maken noise? is there really anyone blowing up? What Juice? Northpole? Hot Rod? Come on man, they all have albums sitting on the shelf not doing nothing. Believe me, I work in the industry, I see Northpole's signed everyday to labels, given the chains, and hope, and nothing happens.

Nothing new. Everyone can rep AZ to the fullest, but aint shit gonna happen here. Believe me, I'm no hater, I support all genres of music in AZ. But look at what you're saying, Gem Blossoms, people call them has beens, Authority Zero, they've done big things, AZ dont care. Jimmy Eat World the same, AZ doesnt support the system, They just talk shit and want to know when are they gonna get there shot. Stop bitching AZ, step up and make progress.

As for Sonny Long, yeah, what a waste of paper, print, time for sure. Definitely smells like desperation. All the phoenix newtimes believes in is controversy. Something they think people will pick up the paper for. This aint TMZ. Phoenix Newtimes would rather take shots at somebody, rather then help support someone. You want to do a story, find all the growing music scenes in AZ, and give them props, from HipHop to Rock and everything in between. Thats a story.

What really was the point of this article. Why did you guys waste 6 pages of ink and a cover on this dude.He is obviously full of himself and has nothin going on or nothin to offer. Although I give him props for getting yall to put him on the cover and get a six page spread over a 5 day period. But why?

There are so many talented Hip Hop Artists in Phoenix that have a real story (true stories) They've done some real grindin and deserve to be heard. Why not seek them out and give them a chance to be heard. I read your paper every week I love reading the articles however this one was ridiculous.

You know what you should do for the summer, dedicate one page to hip hop artist do a weekly feature on up & coming hip hop artists tell their story get their music heard instead of wastin your time on somebody like Sonny Long. Oh yeah! you can tell Sonny Long for me that holding up the L still stands for loser

This is truly a waste of precious time, energy, ink and paper. New Times my husband and I occassionaly read your low life paper but this is extreme desperation to get a story. Life is precious spend the time writing about inspiring our communities to reach out and help each other. I support Sonny Long because he must be a young man of extreme tolerance, style and determination to achieve his dreams. The writers need to get a life and do something more productive. Thumbs up for Sonny Long!! He will overcome this beat down and soar like an eagle. By the way readers: don't believe everything you read. Sharon & Tim

I gotta agree with luxe.. if the whole point of the article is that he isn't famous, rich, and or doesn't have any music then why did he make the cover and not willy northpole lying ass (who they had the nerve to use as a character witness... LMAO!!!) or any one else out here actually doing something worth reading about????????

New Times is full of SHIT.. Our struggling hip hop scene RARELY gets a cover on this white college kid newspaper.. I understand there are like 5 to 1 rock groups out here, but DAMN...

Is a little support too much to ask? Does anyone know a radio station supporting the local hip hop scene? Shit, can we at least get it in print??

"FUCK THE NEW TIMES" - Luxe International

After some research, I have to side with the New Times writers. Lots of BS by Sonny Long, and hopeful self-promotion, but in the end, all of his stuff is fluff. He should spend more time working on his music. Any true musician has a lot of material that they have created, and want heard. Where is his? The video is telling in that all he has as answers to the questions is more BS.

Bottom line is that if you agree to an interview, you need to be able to respond with something approaching reality. At that point, you agree to put yourself out there. The whole thing is sad.

It's always sad to see someone who was probably told they were special too many times as a child. It's even sadder to see the folks at New Times getting their jollies by belittling him in front of the whole world. This whole thing reeks of self-indulgence and makes me a little sick. I don't know how any of you people sleep at night, ugh..
